Choose the architecture before optimizing the budget
| Architecture | Suitable project question | Trade-off to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Rigid boards joined by a connector or cable | Can separate assemblies fit and remain serviceable? | Connector space, assembly operations and service access. |
| Flex circuit with local stiffeners | Do component or connector regions need local support without rigid multilayer circuitry? | Support geometry, connector thickness and assembly fixtures. |
| Integrated rigid-flex | Must rigid circuit regions and the flexible interconnect be one fabricated assembly? | Regional stackup, manufacturing route, test access and installed shape. |
For a 6-total / 2-flex concept, the rigid sections can use L1每L6 while only L3 and L4 continue across the bridge. The six-layer mapping shows exactly what that means. Layer count is not a substitute for the finished thickness of the flex.
A useful purchasing decision compares the complete installed assembly, including connectors, fixtures, test and handling. Keep the bare-board budget separate from components and assembly, then review the combined scope through rigid-flex assembly planning.
Choose the next review for your project
| Your task | What to review | Continue |
|---|---|---|
| Layer construction | Total vs continuing flex layers; thickness by region | Stackup and layer mapping |
| Six-layer design | Six total layers with the actual flex span identified | Six-layer rigid-flex |
| Layout and materials | Zone boundaries, material system and model assumptions | Design guidelines |
| Assembly | Carriers, access, handling and test scope | Rigid-flex assembly |
| Cost and purchasing | Files, scope and quote comparison | Prepare an RFQ |
Before awarding a new program, use the rigid-flex supplier qualification worksheet to request evidence for the proposed layer construction, bend duty and inspection scope.

Region and bend workbench
Use consistent layer numbering and actual finished thicknesses. The calculator checks one contiguous flex span; it does not infer bonding materials or approve a manufacturing process.

Rigid-flex PCB budget scenario
Explore an early bare-board allowance. The coefficients are uncalibrated; unsupported combinations require an engineering quote.

Continue with the next engineering decision
Follow the rigid-flex manufacturing sequence to review the flex subcircuit, transition, rigid buildup and final opening before release.
- Flexible PCB manufacturing
- HDI interconnect review
- Stackup submission checklist
- Rigid-flex cost drivers
Once the rigid-flex construction is defined, review the broader PCB manufacturing and production-release scope to align fabrication data, inspection and the supply request.
