Build the assembly plan around the flexible substrate

Flex PCB assembly needs a stable presentation of the circuit during printing, placement and soldering. The substrate, exposed contacts, reinforcement and panel support should be reviewed together with the BOM. An outline that works mechanically in the product may still need a carrier during assembly.

Process decisionProvide or agree
Support fixtureOutline, component clearance, support locations and process-temperature suitability.
Moisture handlingMaterial-specific storage, handling and any approved drying procedure.
SolderingComponent limits, finish, accessible lands and process profile.
Inspection and testTest points, fixture access, programming and acceptance criteria.
Final handlingDepanelization, installed shape, connector protection and shipping restraint.

For general component sourcing and responsibility boundaries, see PCB assembly services. For the unpopulated circuit, start with flexible PCB manufacturing.

Separate permanent reinforcement from temporary assembly tooling

ItemRemains in the product?Review question
PI or FR-4 stiffenerUsually yes, if specified in the drawingDoes its thickness and position meet the connector or component support requirement?
Reusable assembly carrierNoDoes it locate the panel through the assembly process while preserving access?
Test fixtureNoCan probes and connectors reach the required points without deforming the flex?
Shipping restraintPackaging-dependentWill it protect the circuit without adding an unintended fold or contact damage?

Example planning sequence: identify supported printing and placement areas, agree the assembly carrier, inspect the soldered circuit while accessible, run the specified test, then release it for the defined final handling. The carrier design must be reviewed for the actual board and process; the product photos are not fixture qualification evidence.

Flex assembly and support examples

Product images show circuit forms and reinforcement concepts. Fixture suitability and inspection coverage must be confirmed for the actual assembly.

Resolve the fixture before fixing the unit price

A reusable carrier, local stiffener and temporary handling support do different jobs. Define what remains on the delivered circuit and what belongs to the manufacturing process. Include access for test probes and keep supported regions consistent with the component and connector layout.

Quote component supply, bare-flex supply, labour, tooling, testing and programming as separate scope items. A labour-only budget cannot stand in for a turnkey price. The planner below keeps an unknown fixture allowance open for review instead of pretending it costs zero.

Plan the assembly enquiry

Fixture cost depends on outline, support points, component access and process temperature. Leave the allowance blank when it needs review.

Flex Assembly Tooling & Budget Planner

Using this tool & sharing results

Use the stated units, input limits and model assumptions. Results support an engineering discussion; they do not approve a design, process or production order.

After changing inputs, update the result before using it. Where a download or copy action is available, review that brief and attach or paste it into your enquiry. Opening Contact does not transfer these inputs or send a request.

How to use and share tool results

Prepare the next engineering review

Send the available files even if some decisions remain open. Mark the points where you need advice.

  • Gerber or agreed fabrication data, outline drawing and drill data where applicable.
  • Layer stackup, material grades, finished thickness and tolerances.
  • Bend zones, installed radius, motion duty, coverlay openings and reinforcement drawing.
  • Connector requirements, order quantities and requested delivery.
  • BOM, placement file, assembly drawing, fixture constraints and test/programming requirements.

Download calculator results if you want to include them. Contact inputs are not automatically filled from these tools.

Practical questions

Do I need a fixture if the flex already has a stiffener?

Possibly. A permanent stiffener and a temporary assembly carrier serve different purposes. Review support, locating features and component clearances together.

What should accompany consigned components?

Identify part numbers, quantities, packaging, traceability requirements and any handling restrictions. Resolve substitutions and shortages before the build.

Can a generic reflow profile be used?

Agree the process for the actual flex construction, finish, components and support tooling. Do not infer a qualified profile from the circuit thickness alone.

Does the assembly planner include functional testing?

Only the scope explicitly entered or agreed can be included. Functional testing needs a procedure, fixtures, access and pass/fail limits; labour estimates do not define them.
