Aluminum PCB Manufacturing
For LED and power designs, specify the dielectric and mounting interface as carefully as the aluminum. Use the thermal budget to prepare a board that can be evaluated in its real cooling system.

Where an aluminum PCB is a good starting point
An aluminum PCB usually means an aluminum-backed insulated metal substrate: circuit copper over a thermal dielectric bonded to an aluminum base. The metal provides a mounting and heat-spreading structure while the dielectric separates the electrical circuitry from it.
LED arrays, linear luminaires and compact power modules are common reasons to consider this construction. The useful question is whether it meets your junction-temperature, isolation and mounting requirements at the required production cost.

If the product needs dense multilayer routing, first compare MCPCB with FR-4. If you already suspect the base is thermally limiting, use the copper-base comparison.
Aluminum PCB budget planning
Aluminum PCB Budget Planner
A simple board estimate cannot include a qualified dielectric, custom machining or an LED assembly BOM without a real quote. Mark those requirements in your enquiry instead of treating the model range as a purchase price.
Build a junction-temperature budget
Use the package*s junction-to-thermal-pad resistance for the intended cooling path. Add solder/contact, dielectric, base, mounting interface and sink-to-ambient contributions without double counting. A datasheet R牟JA measured on a reference board is not a substitute for that package-path value.
Aluminum PCB Thermal Budget
Unit-check example. A 100 ?m dielectric at 2 W/m﹞K over 100 mm? contributes 0.50 K/W. The conversion is 100 ℅ 10?? m and 100 ℅ 10?? m?. With the default package and cooling assumptions, the model gives 5.875 K/W and 98.75 ∼C at 10 W and 40 ∼C ambient. These are example inputs, not measured board performance.
Choose the dielectric by thermal and electrical requirements
| Material question | What to compare |
|---|---|
| Thickness and thermal impedance | Compare at the thickness you will buy; include test method, contact conditions and area units. |
| Electrical isolation | Working voltage, environment, creepage/clearance and the agreed proof-test procedure. |
| Temperature and cycling | The component, laminate, solder and mounting system together. Tg is not a maximum operating-temperature rating. |
| Base alloy and temper | Conductivity, machining, bending or mounting requirements; specify the actual grade. |
| Finish and solder mask | Pad finish for the assembly process; mask type and optical requirements for lighting. |

Aluminum PCB layout, mounting and assembly
Follow the aluminum PCB manufacturing process to connect the IMS stack, circuit pattern, metal-edge control and separate electrical verification tasks.
| Design detail | Practical review |
|---|---|
| Heat-flow area | Do not assume the entire outline participates equally in cooling a small thermal pad. Review copper spreading and any interface-contact limitation. |
| Through holes | Separate mechanical holes from electrical plated holes. An insulated plated connection through the base requires a defined construction. |
| Edges and fasteners | Agree copper-to-edge/metal clearances, deburring, hole location, clamping and torque requirements. |
| Reflow | The aluminum mass changes the thermal response. Measure a suitable assembled-board profile instead of copying an FR-4 recipe. |
| Thermal pads | Follow the component guidance and agree solder coverage and inspection criteria. A photo cannot establish void percentage. |
| Temperature validation | Check the relevant package point or junction estimate under the real power, enclosure and ambient conditions. |

For populated lighting or power boards, use PCB assembly services and include the BOM, placement data and thermal-pad acceptance requirements.
Aluminum PCB questions
Is the aluminum base electrically isolated?
In a conventional IMS board, the specified dielectric separates the circuit from the base. That does not automatically isolate edges, screws or plated holes, or qualify the finished product for a given working voltage.
Does an aluminum PCB need a heat sink?
Often it needs a path to a heat sink or the enclosure. Whether natural convection from the board alone is sufficient depends on power, area, orientation and ambient conditions.
Is a thicker aluminum base always better?
No. It changes stiffness and heat spreading, but also mass, cost and assembly response. In a one-dimensional through-thickness calculation, increasing thickness increases that layer*s resistance. Real spreading is a separate effect.
Can an aluminum PCB be double-sided?
Special constructions can support two circuit sides or additional routing layers. They need a specific dielectric, hole and bonding plan; they are not an automatic extension of the simple one-layer estimate.
What does ※1-layer aluminum PCB§ mean?
One electrical copper circuit layer. The dielectric and metal support are physical layers but are not additional copper routing layers.
How do I select 1, 2 or 3 W/m﹞K material?
Start with an allowable thermal-resistance budget and electrical requirements. Conductivity alone does not account for thickness, contact area or cooling; do not assign material grades only by application name.
Request an aluminum PCB quote
Send the released files, or clearly mark preliminary data. Include the points below so the quote describes the board you actually need.
- Circuit files and drill data; outline, mounting and revision.
- Aluminum grade/thickness, circuit copper, dielectric grade/thickness or required thermal and isolation targets.
- LED or power-package data, dissipated heat and mounting arrangement.
- Quantity, surface finish, solder mask and any assembly BOM/placement files.
