What is an alumina PCB〞and when is it useful?
An alumina PCB is a circuit built on an aluminum-oxide ceramic substrate. The ceramic provides electrical insulation and a path for conducted heat; patterned metal provides the interconnections. The name specifies the base material, not the conductor-forming process. An alumina circuit can use printed thick films, deposited thin films or a suitable copper metallization route. These constructions have different design rules, assembly interfaces and costs.
Start with the function that needs improvement. A resistor network may need a stable substrate and repeatable film geometry. A sensor may need a carefully defined exposed region. A power assembly may need less resistance between its heat source and cold plate. The useful question is which ceramic and metal construction meets that function within the mechanical, electrical and purchasing constraints.
Use this page to prepare a material and thickness decision. For a wider route comparison, the Ceramic PCB manufacturing hub connects substrate selection with circuit processes. If the drawing already specifies a released construction, send it directly for review; the calculator is optional.
Specify the grade, not only the alumina percentage
Common procurement descriptions include 96% and 99.6% alumina. Purity helps identify the material family, but it does not fully specify grain structure, surface condition, flatness, dielectric behavior or thermal conductivity. Two nominally similar materials can require different preparation for the same metallization. Request a grade code and its current data sheet, then decide which properties belong in purchasing acceptance.
For example, identifies ADS-996 alumina for thin-film electronics. This supports a grade-specific conversation; it does not establish an automatic requirement for every alumina PCB. Choose surface and electrical requirements from the actual circuit, rather than upgrading purity simply because the number is higher.
| Specification item | Why it changes the design | What to put in the enquiry |
|---|---|---|
| Ceramic identity | Different grades are not interchangeable by appearance | Supplier, grade, purity requirement and permitted alternatives |
| Thickness and tolerance | Affect thermal resistance, handling and dimensional fit | Nominal ceramic-only thickness and permitted range |
| Surface condition | Affects fine patterning and attachment interfaces | As-fired, lapped or polished requirement with a measurement basis |
| Metallization | Determines conductor geometry and assembly compatibility | Process family, complete metal stack and thicknesses |
| Mechanical features | Holes, slots and edges affect yield and fixture design | Dimensioned drawing, datums and local acceptance criteria |
| Electrical properties | Depend on grade, temperature and frequency | Relevant test method, conditions and required evidence |
Compare technical data under comparable conditions. A room-temperature conductivity value cannot describe every operating temperature. A dielectric constant reported at one frequency is not automatically the correct design value for a microwave layout. Record the method, condition and document revision beside a number, especially when two suppliers report apparently similar specifications.
Calculate a bounded ceramic thermal resistance
The worksheet calculates a one-dimensional slab interval from ceramic thickness, thickness tolerance, conductivity bounds and a uniform heat-flow area. Enter the heat actually crossing that area, not the electrical power supplied to an entire product. An LED converts some input energy to light; a power converter distributes loss among several components and paths.
For a slab, R = t / (k ℅ A). Use thickness in metres, conductivity in W/mK and area in square metres to obtain K/W. The ceramic temperature difference is 忖T = Q ℅ R. This is a difference across the model boundary, not a predicted junction temperature or an allowable service temperature.
Alumina PCB Engineering Planner
An illustrative 0.635 mm slab, 100 mm? uniform area and 24 W/mK conductivity gives 0.2646 K/W. At 10 W passing through that area, the slab difference is about 2.65 K. Add a ㊣0.025 mm thickness tolerance and a conductivity interval of 24每26 W/mK: the calculated resistance spans approximately 0.2346每0.2750 K/W. These are transparent arithmetic inputs, not a 勛圖tv tolerance guarantee.
The publishes a 24 W/mK alumina example. Use the particular grade*s data and relevant temperature for a project. The worksheet starts empty so a visitor does not accidentally mistake an illustrative material value for an approved specification.
The model excludes lateral spreading, bond-line voids, contact resistance, convection and transient heating. A small die on a large tile does not instantly use the full tile area as its effective heat-transfer area. If that simplification drives the choice, compare it with a thermal model or measurement representing the actual attachment and cooling arrangement.
Match metallization to the circuit task
Choose thin-film ceramic circuitry when fine deposited geometry, an integrated resistor pattern or a carefully controlled bonding surface drives the requirement. Its drawing needs the function of each metal layer, not merely a request for a gold-colored surface. Surface roughness and pattern tolerances should support the electrical and assembly task.
Choose thick-film ceramic circuits when compatible printed conductors, resistors, dielectric crossovers or protective layers form the required circuit. Screen design, paste selection, drying and firing are part of that system. A printed resistor is not specified by its nominal resistance alone; tolerance, loading, temperature behavior and test access matter too.
Copper-based routes address a different balance of conductor thickness, heat spreading and interconnection. The describes metal-to-ceramic bonding. Do not convert that general route into a claim that every copper thickness, line spacing and ceramic outline can be manufactured together. Request review of the complete pattern and attachment requirements.
Detail the edges, holes and mounting interface
A ceramic drawing should identify functional datums and distinguish ceramic dimensions from metal-pattern dimensions. State whether a hole is for mounting, alignment or an electrical connection. Define its relationship to the nearest conductor and the board edge. A single global tolerance is often a poor substitute for tolerances on the features that actually mate with a housing or component.
Ceramics require attention to support and handling. Avoid designing a mounting arrangement that forces a bowed substrate flat without an agreed mechanical analysis. Identify the supported regions, fastener interface and expected loading. A local edge chip away from the circuit may have a different significance from a defect entering a bond pad or an isolation path; the drawing should make that distinction measurable.
For fine circuits, define how the pattern registers to the substrate. For a thermal attachment, discuss contact-surface condition and flatness over the functional footprint. For assemblies using bare die or wire bonds, identify pad metallurgy and contamination restrictions before fabrication. These details often explain quotation differences more usefully than an overall ※high precision§ instruction.

Turn the application into a specific requirement
For an industrial sensing circuit, describe the active sensing area, exposure to fluids or cleaning, resistor drift requirement and mounting arrangement. A robust substrate alone does not qualify the sensing element. Prototype measurements should test the intended electrical function under the relevant environment and include any coating or encapsulation used in production.
For LED or power electronics, identify the loss map and cooling boundary before comparing materials. If the alumina slab is only a small part of the thermal path, improving the interface may have more effect than replacing the ceramic. If the slab remains dominant, compare an aluminum nitride PCB thermal path with the same thickness and surrounding conditions.
For RF circuits, release the conductor geometry and dielectric model together. Ground connections, connector launches and assembly transitions can dominate measured performance even when the substrate data look attractive. Include the intended frequency range, port definitions and coupon or test-fixture plan so manufacturing and verification use the same interpretation of the drawing.
What determines alumina PCB cost?
The main cost questions are substrate grade and format, surface preparation, metallization, pattern complexity, machining, testing and order quantity. An economical blank can become an expensive finished part if the outline leaves poor utilization, if a special polish is unnecessary, or if a late pad change requires new masks and verification. Conversely, a tighter feature may be justified if it removes an expensive assembly operation.
The budget brief separates recurring fabrication allowance from one-time setup and batch verification. It has no built-in ceramic market rate. Enter a dated supplier or internal allowance for the specified construction, or leave every cost blank to create a technical RFQ brief. Partial costs are rejected so an incomplete total does not appear to be a complete project price.
Alumina PCB Budget Brief
Compare like-for-like scopes: acceptable delivered pieces, tooling ownership, inspection records, packaging and any assembly operations. Freight and taxes should be identified separately unless explicitly included. If a manufacturer proposes another grade, request both the expected commercial benefit and the technical differences requiring approval. A lower unit allowance is useful only when the product requirements remain satisfied.
Agree what the first build must demonstrate
Before ordering, name the critical dimensions and the electrical tests required for the circuit. Decide whether the acceptance package needs a material declaration, dimensional report, resistance results, adhesion evidence, or application-specific testing. State the sample quantity and decision rule for each requested test. ※Inspect everything§ leaves room for different interpretations and does not define the test conditions.
Keep prototype observations tied to the drawing revision. If a resistor is adjusted, a pad finish is changed or a substrate alternative is approved, update the released construction rather than relying on an email thread as the production specification. The ceramic manufacturing process guide explains where these choices enter the route and what evidence should accompany the handoff.
Alumina PCB questions before quotation
Is 99.6% alumina always better than 96%?
No. The right choice depends on the surface, electrical, thermal and manufacturing requirements of the circuit. Compare identified grades under relevant test conditions. Higher purity alone does not establish a better assembled product or justify a price premium.
Does alumina make the whole board a heat sink?
It provides a conduction path and electrical insulation. The metal pattern, interfaces and cooling arrangement determine how heat enters, spreads and leaves. A ceramic-only calculation cannot establish ambient temperature rise or junction temperature.
Can an existing FR-4 layout be fabricated unchanged on alumina?
Treat it as a design transfer requiring review. Metallization, hole construction, edges, assembly attachment and the electrical model may differ. Send the original files and identify the reason for the material change so the review can focus on the relevant constraints.
Which files should I send first?
Send circuit artwork, a dimensioned mechanical drawing, ceramic and metal requirements, quantity breaks and the intended assembly method. Add the critical performance or acceptance requirements. If a material or process remains undecided, describe that question explicitly rather than selecting an arbitrary value.
Request a ceramic material review
Send the ceramic grade, drawing revision, circuit layers, metallization, quantity and assembly interface. Include the measurements or acceptance criteria that matter to this build. Preliminary files and open process questions are welcome.
