4 Layer Flex PCB Manufacturing & Stackup
Four routing layers require a mechanical stackup as well as an electrical one.

4 Layer Flex PCB ¡ª design decisions
A four-layer flexible PCB can provide additional routing and reference-layer options compared with double-sided flex. The additional dielectric, bonding layers and copper also change thickness and bending behaviour. A four-layer flex is not the same construction as a rigid-flex board with four rigid layers.
| Layout question | Construction information needed |
|---|---|
| Where are the four layers required? | Identify component, routing and bend zones rather than assuming uniform mechanical duty. |
| What are the reference layers? | Define signal/return assignments and any impedance requirement. |
| What bonds the subassemblies? | List dielectric and adhesive thicknesses from the actual supplier construction. |
| Where does the board bend? | State installed radius and whether it moves repeatedly; avoid inferring suitability from layer count. |
The flex stackup design guide can support the drawing discussion. The planner below adds entered material totals; it does not generate a qualified four-layer manufacturing stack.
Do not use a two-layer bend rule unchanged
Thickness in the bend region includes the copper, dielectric, bonding and protective materials present there. If the construction changes by zone, calculate and review each relevant zone. Bonded and locally unbonded constructions are different engineering decisions and need explicit drawings.
Where component support requires a genuinely rigid section, compare rigid-flex PCB construction. A local stiffener on flex does not create electrically interconnected rigid PCB layers.
Material selection starts with the actual laminate, copper and coverlay grades. Refer to and the supplier drawing for each selected grade. Kapton and Pyralux are not interchangeable names for every flexible circuit material.
Flex design & project planning
Check bend-region thickness and the local connector stack separately. Enter the actual supplier values; do not count stiffeners as part of a flexible bend.
Flexible PCB Design Workbench
Planning aid. Legacy costs, limits and material presets are illustrative and require engineering confirmation; they are not a quotation or production approval.
Optional bare-flex budget
Choose the construction independently from the design check. This is an early budget scenario; it does not price a validated stackup.
Flexible PCB Budget Estimator
Planning aid. Legacy costs, limits and material presets are illustrative and require engineering confirmation; they are not a quotation or production approval.
Prepare the next engineering review
Send the available files even if some decisions remain open. Mark the points where you need advice.
- Gerber or agreed fabrication data, outline drawing and drill data where applicable.
- Layer stackup, material grades, finished thickness and tolerances.
- Bend zones, installed radius, motion duty, coverlay openings and reinforcement drawing.
- Connector requirements, order quantities and requested delivery.
Download calculator results if you want to include them. Contact inputs are not automatically filled from these tools.
Questions to resolve before release
Does this calculator approve the bend radius or cycle life?
No. It checks arithmetic against an entered planning ratio. Copper, material construction, routing, installed geometry and motion conditions require review and, where needed, testing. It does not predict fatigue life.
Is the online figure a firm price?
No. The scenario coefficients are not calibrated to current supplier quotations. Submit files so the actual construction, tooling and scope can be quoted.
Can I send an incomplete design?
Yes. Send the outline, electrical and mechanical constraints, target quantity and any available stackup. Identify the open decisions so they can be reviewed.
