What is an FR4 PCB〞and what must a drawing specify?

An FR4 PCB is a printed circuit board made using a flame-retardant glass-reinforced epoxy laminate system. FR4 describes a material family, not one universal resin, dielectric constant or temperature limit. A useful manufacturing specification identifies the required grade or approved equivalence, construction, copper, finished dimensions and verification scope. Those details determine whether two proposed boards are actually interchangeable.

For an ordinary control board, a suitable established FR4 system may meet the mechanical, assembly and electrical requirements economically. For a dense multilayer, a thermally demanding assembly or a fast channel, the decision needs more than a familiar material label. Start with the requirement that would make a build fail: connector fit, hole reliability, assembly exposure, insertion loss, insulation, or a controlled impedance. Then select and document the construction that addresses it.

This page helps you turn ※FR4 board§ into a reviewable manufacturing request. The wider PCB material guide compares other substrate families. If you already have an approved FR4 stackup, you can go directly to engineering review with the drawings; the worksheets are optional.

Four specifications hidden inside ※FR4§

DecisionWhat to specifyWhy it changes the build
Resin systemManufacturer, grade, revision and substitution policySimilar family names do not establish equivalent thermal or electrical behavior
Dielectric constructionCores, prepreg, glass styles and pressed dimensionsDetermines spacing, resin distribution and the physical layer arrangement
CopperStarting foil and required finished copper by layerEtching, plating and conductor geometry depend on the actual requirement
Finished productOverall thickness, outline, holes, finish and acceptance scopeThe manufactured board must fit and function in the assembly

A copper-clad core is already cured and may carry copper on one or both faces. PCB prepreg contains a partly cured resin system that bonds the stack during pressing. A nominal material description should not combine these two states. Keep the material supplier*s sheet dimensions separate from the fabricator*s pressed dielectric proposal and the finished board requirement.

A four-layer construction has several material roles
Conceptual four-layer section. Thickness, glass style and electrical layer functions require a project-specific stackup.

An illustrative four-layer arrangement might contain outer foil, prepreg, an etched double-sided core, another prepreg region and outer foil. The arrangement does not establish a particular thickness, impedance or production recipe. Once the layer functions are known, use the four-layer stackup page for that specific planning task, or the multilayer PCB guide for a broader layer decision.

Select the grade from the operating and assembly requirements

Write down the assembly process before choosing solely by Tg. Include soldering profiles, expected rework and any subsequent thermal processing. Separately record continuous service conditions, local hot regions, enclosure restrictions and the applicable end-product requirements. Tg, decomposition behavior and recognized operating conditions answer different questions; one number cannot substitute for the entire review.

For example, Isola describes as a high-performance FR4 epoxy system and publishes supporting construction and process documents. Treat the product data as information about that material under its documented conditions. It does not prove that any unnamed FR4 board, or every construction using that resin, has the same behavior. The Isola 370HR PCB page is the appropriate next step when that particular grade is under consideration.

For signals, record frequency content or channel requirements, copper roughness assumptions and dielectric geometry. A higher Tg does not automatically make a laminate low loss. Ask whether your concern is manufacturing thermal exposure, electrical loss, or both. The FR4 dielectric constant guide explains how to keep Dk conditions with the number rather than applying one catalogue value to every trace.

Name the requirement before selecting the grade
Four different requirements help define a material review; no single grade or Tg value resolves them all.

Mechanical requirements can be equally decisive. A tight connector slot or a clamped assembly may make finished thickness and local flatness important. A heavy component may require board support. These are product constraints to review alongside the laminate choice, not properties that a ※high-grade FR4§ label automatically resolves.

Check the dielectric space available in your proposed board

The dielectric-space worksheet subtracts entered copper and coating allowances from a target thickness. It helps catch an impossible or poorly defined thickness budget before detailed stackup work. Enter physical copper layer count, actual thickness assumptions and the source of those assumptions. Inner layers share one entered copper value in this simplified model; use a detailed schedule if they differ.

Budget outputs are planning scenarios. Check the included costs and rate assumptions; a confirmed quotation requires a review of your files and scope.

After changing inputs, update the result before using it. Where a download or copy action is available, review that brief and attach or paste it into your enquiry. Opening Contact does not transfer these inputs or send a request.

How to use and share tool results

In the illustrative four-layer case, 35 ?m on each copper layer contributes 0.14 mm. A 1.60 mm target with no included coating allowance leaves 1.46 mm for dielectric. Dividing this by three gives an arithmetic mean only. It is not a recommendation for equal dielectric gaps, a controlled-impedance solution or evidence that a supplier stocks the required construction.

Use a positive result to start a conversation about available cores, pressed prepreg regions and layer functions. If the result is negative, first check units and the target definition. Do not ※fix§ the arithmetic by quietly reducing finished copper that the electrical design requires. The separate FR4 thickness worksheet accepts individual constituent values when you have a fuller proposal.

Connect the material choice with fabrication controls

During manufacturing, the laminate system interacts with imaging, etching, drilling, hole preparation, metallization and pressing. Copper distribution influences local resin demand; drilled features introduce geometric and thermal constraints. Material identity alone is not a complete statement of process capability. Provide the actual layout and any exceptional features so the review addresses this board rather than a generic capability table.

For a dense board, identify the smallest finished holes, their layer spans and the intended fill or cap requirements. For a power board, distinguish conductor cross-section from a claim about allowable current. For a controlled-impedance board, preserve the electrical targets, reference planes and stackup revision together. Manufacturing compensation should be agreed without losing the required finished geometry.

An engineering question can be resolved with a controlled exception or a revised stackup proposal. Record which file changed and why. If a replacement material is proposed, compare the properties relevant to the product, check the applicable approval process and retain the final agreed identity. ※Equivalent FR4§ without a documented basis is too ambiguous for repeat production.

The PCB manufacturing service brings the released construction, fabrication data and inspection request together. Detailed explanations of pressing belong on the PCB lamination process page, so this material page can remain focused on choosing and specifying the board.

What affects FR4 PCB cost?

Material grade is one contributor. Panel utilization, layer count, copper requirements, drilling complexity, finish, inspection, quantity and delivery conditions can change the overall cost more than a simple comparison of resin names. A quotation needs the combination. A small board with an unusual construction can be harder to price than a larger board using a well-established build.

Separate recurring board cost from batch-specific work. Setup, engineering review, test coupons and special documentation may not scale directly with quantity. Compare quotations on the same fabrication scope, revision and delivery basis. Confirm whether freight, taxes, assembly and component procurement are included rather than interpreting different totals as a manufacturing-efficiency difference.

This budget brief has no built-in FR4 market price. Leave all three cost allowances blank to create a technical RFQ summary. Alternatively enter a per-board allowance plus setup and batch verification amounts from a dated source. All amounts must use the selected currency. A change to the board specification clears the amounts so an old allowance is not silently applied to a different construction.

The illustrative arithmetic is 20 boards at 12 currency units, plus 100 setup and 60 verification: 400 total, or 20 per board. These numbers teach the calculation only. They are not 勛圖tv prices or a supplier quotation. Download the current brief and attach it manually to your enquiry; the two worksheets do not transfer project data to each other or to Contact automatically.

A concise FR4 manufacturing handoff

Make the manufacturing request reproducible
An engineering handoff links the selected material to the manufactured board and the requested evidence.

Send fabrication files, the board drawing and an identifiable revision. Add the layer order, proposed material grade, copper requirements, target thickness and tolerances, surface finish, special holes and any electrical test or coupon request. State the quantity and whether a controlled material substitution is permitted. If an item is undecided, name it as an open question instead of placing incompatible alternatives in the same drawing.

An effective review request describes the consequence of the requirement. ※This edge mates with a connector§ helps the reviewer understand why thickness matters. ※These nets need an agreed impedance coupon§ is more actionable than ※high-speed quality.§ Include the relevant locations and reference documents, while keeping unnecessary confidential product information out of a general enquiry.

For incoming verification, agree which records accompany the boards and which characteristics require measurement. Material documentation, electrical testing and dimensional inspection provide different evidence. A photograph of a green panel cannot verify its grade, temperature rating or internal construction. The real product photographs on this page illustrate board form and routing only.

FR4 PCB questions

Is FR4 one specific material?

No. The term identifies a broad material family. Manufacturer grade, reinforcement, resin system and construction make a manufacturing requirement more precise. When equivalence is permitted, define the properties and approval process used to evaluate it.

Does a thicker FR4 board carry more current?

Overall board thickness is not conductor cross-section. Current and heating depend on finished copper geometry, thermal paths and operating conditions. A thicker dielectric can change mechanical behavior without increasing the thickness of a current-carrying trace.

Should every FR4 board use a high-Tg grade?

Select from the assembly and service requirements, not a universal upgrade rule. The high-Tg PCB guide addresses grade selection, while FR4 temperature-rating guidance explains why Tg and continuous operating conditions must remain separate.

Can the worksheets approve my stackup?

No. They expose arithmetic and missing inputs. Available constructions, electrical behavior, process suitability and acceptance requirements need a project review. Send the downloaded assumptions with the actual stackup and drawing if you want the calculations to inform that discussion.

Discuss the material and construction you need

Send the board revision, construction, quantity and the material or construction question you need reviewed. Identify unresolved requirements so the response can address them.
