Alumina Substrate Selection: Geometry, Metallization and Assembly
An alumina substrate can provide an electrically insulating ceramic platform for electronic circuits, but the word alumina does not specify a complete PCB construction. Grade, purity, thickness, metallization, geometry and assembly route all influence suitability.
This page helps define the substrate and fabrication question. The slab calculator gives a through-thickness conduction reference from entered properties and area. It does not select a grade, model spreading or establish a finished ceramic circuit's thermal performance.

Specify the ceramic grade and form
Identify the supplier grade, composition description and supplied form. Different alumina grades can have different thermal, mechanical and processing characteristics. Do not treat a nominal purity label as a complete substitute for the current material specification.
State whether the requirement is an unmetalized plate, a patterned circuit substrate or a populated assembly. Those deliverables need different drawings and evidence. A material supplier's ceramic capability is not the same as a manufacturer's ability to produce the requested circuit structure.
Choose the circuit process deliberately
Metallization and patterning determine how the circuit is formed and connected. Thick-film, thin-film and bonded-metal routes have different design and process considerations. Specify the intended route or identify it as a decision requiring review.
Use ceramic PCB manufacturing for the surrounding construction discussion. Do not import an organic PCB design-rule set unchanged into a ceramic process. Feature, edge, hole and attachment requirements should be reviewed against the actual route.
| Review item | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Deliverable | Bare ceramic, patterned substrate or assembled circuit. |
| Process | Specific metallization and geometry review. |
| Model | Local constant-area conduction, not whole-assembly prediction. |
| Release | Grade, attachment, electrical requirements and acceptance scope. |

Use the current inputs and keep the assumptions
Start with the physical boundary named above the inputs. Enter your own values, or select Load example to explore the labeled teaching case. Example mode stays visible after edits so an illustrative calculation is not mistaken for measured project data. Clear for my inputs removes the sample values and starts a separate record.
Generate the result after completing every field. Changing any input invalidates the previous output and disables its download until you calculate again. Read the limitations below the numbers: a geometric or arithmetic result does not qualify a material, approve a circuit or establish manufacturing capability.
Download the current result if it helps the review. The text file contains inputs, outputs, assumptions and the tool version. It stays on your device; attach it manually to an enquiry if useful. No CAD is uploaded or interpreted, and nothing is automatically inserted into the Contact form. You can request an engineering review without completing this tool.
| Input | What to establish before using it |
|---|---|
| Review reference | Use a nonconfidential scope or revision. |
| Uniform heat-flow area 繚 mm簡 | Same constant area through one homogeneous slab; no spreading. |
| Layer thickness 繚 繕m | Finished thickness, not the starting coating. |
| Through-thickness conductivity 繚 W/(m繚K) | Entered value with temperature and test method; no supplier default. |
| Heat through this layer 繚 W | Not automatically total electrical input or total package loss. |
Optional cost comparison from your own allowances
Use a quotation or a clearly labeled internal assumption for each input. Keep the quantity, construction and inspection scope the same when comparing alternatives. This uncalibrated planning model adds entered values; it contains no current market rates and does not issue a 勛圖tv quotation. You can contact the team without completing it.
Entered material and process budget
Use a local thermal reference
For a homogeneous plate with uniform one-dimensional flow, R = t/(kA). Enter the actual thickness and a documented through-thickness conductivity at the relevant condition. Keep the source area consistent with the model rather than assuming heat instantly uses the entire substrate.
The calculator's example is only a unit and sensitivity exercise. A real assembly can include metallization, die attach, solder, interface materials and lateral spreading. Those elements need their own boundaries and should not be hidden inside a guessed ceramic conductivity.

Review geometry and edge conditions
Outline, thickness, holes, cutouts and edge distances affect handling and mechanical integration. Ceramics can be sensitive to local mechanical conditions, so mounting should avoid treating the substrate as a flexible substitute for an organic board.
Provide the actual support and attachment arrangement. If singulation or edge finishing matters to the assembly, define it with the manufacturer. A nominal plate dimension alone does not describe the local features that govern production and handling.
Include thermal expansion and attachment
Ceramic, metal, solder and housing materials can expand differently. The consequence depends on the complete geometry, constraint and temperature range. A low expansion number by itself does not establish low stress in a bonded assembly.
Use the free expansion comparison to understand one limited geometric relationship, then apply the appropriate mechanical analysis and qualification. Do not infer joint reliability or composite curvature from a two-material free-length calculation.
Preserve electrical requirements
Substrate insulation, metallization spacing and the complete assembly barrier are separate issues. Working voltage, surface condition, contamination and attachment materials may matter. A ceramic's bulk dielectric property does not eliminate the need for an equipment-level insulation review.
For relevant designs, follow high-voltage PCB requirements. Keep the exact grade and processed surface condition in the evidence. Do not use a generic ceramic label to approve creepage, clearance or a continuous service voltage.
Compare total fabrication scope
Include material, metallization, patterning, outline, holes, finish, inspection and assembly. Prototype tooling and qualification can differ from repeat production costs. Compare proposals at the same deliverable boundary and quantity.
The optional budget tool uses your entered allowances only. It does not know ceramic availability, process yield or current prices. If the construction is still open, record the alternatives and the evidence needed before treating a cost as a production estimate.
Prepare a ceramic construction brief
Send the circuit, substrate grade or target properties, dimensions, metallization route, attachment details, electrical requirements and acceptance plan. Identify which dimensions and materials are fixed and which may be proposed by the manufacturer.
Continue to ceramic PCB with that brief. The strongest enquiry links the material decision to the actual electronic and mechanical task, rather than asking for a ceramic board solely because a conductivity table looks attractive.
Link ceramic selection to a controlled circuit process
Identify the supplied ceramic, circuit metallization and final deliverable separately. A blank plate, patterned substrate and assembled module require different process evidence. Keep the exact grade and form with the mechanical drawing, and establish how the selected metallization and attachment route interact with it.
Review local geometry and support. Holes, edges, thickness changes and mounting can influence handling and reliability. A calculation on a homogeneous slab does not establish the behavior of the patterned, attached assembly. Use it for the stated reference task and qualify the complete construction separately.
Discuss inspection and acceptance before a trial build. State which dimensions, electrical conditions and attachment characteristics must be verified. If the construction needs development, identify that scope clearly instead of treating a preliminary quote as a claim of routine production readiness.
Before release, place the chosen requirement, the proposed construction and the evidence in one review record. Separate measured values from supplier nominal data and from your own assumptions. If a value is unknown, identify who will obtain it and what decision depends on it. An empty field is more honest and more useful than an invented typical figure.
During an A/B comparison, change one relevant variable where possible. Preserve the original inputs and the reason for the change. If several things change together, describe the result as a comparison between complete configurations. Do not attribute the entire difference to one material or geometry feature without supporting evidence.
For a repeat order, confirm that the relevant drawing, material and process revisions still match the accepted configuration. Record alternatives explicitly. This small discipline helps purchasing avoid an apparently equivalent substitution that changes the engineering basis of the original decision.
Standards, source context and limits
Use the actual applicable document and edition for contractual requirements. Public technical resources help explain methods, but do not reproduce every condition in a licensed standard or qualify a particular 勛圖tv construction. Retain exact grades and test boundaries when reading supplier data.
The numeric examples on this page are illustrative inputs unless specifically identified otherwise. Archive photographs show relevant physical context; they are not current equipment, material-grade or inspection evidence. Original drawings explain the models and are not production drawings. Ask for the evidence and acceptance scope needed for your project rather than inferring approval from an image or calculator result.
For fabrication scope and the agreed construction requirements, see PCB manufacturing.
