Bergquist vs Laird IMS PCB: Compare Material Roles Before Brands

A Bergquist versus Laird IMS PCB comparison must begin with the exact products being discussed. An IMS electrical dielectric and a thermal interface pad occupy different places in an assembly. Comparing their conductivity numbers cannot establish that one can replace the other.

This page provides a supplier-comparison method based on material role, grade and test conditions. The role gate flags mismatched categories before the detailed review. It does not declare either brand superior or certify an equivalent material.

Put both candidates on the drawing

Mark the location of candidate A and candidate B in the complete assembly. Is each an electrically insulating layer bonded within the PCB, or an interface between an already manufactured board and a housing? Is either a structural substrate or a separate compound?

Laird's illustrates a thermal-interface product role. A product in that category should not be assumed to be an IMS lamination dielectric. Verify the exact current grade rather than inferring a role from a company name.

Stop a comparison that mixes roles

The worksheet asks for each candidate's role and exact grade reference. If the roles differ, its output identifies the comparison as a system-design question, not a direct substitution. Both materials may be useful in the same assembly at different locations.

For example, a board dielectric can separate live copper from a metal base while a pad below the base accommodates a mechanical gap. Improving one does not eliminate the other's job. The correct decision may require reviewing both layers together.

Using this tool & sharing results

Use the stated units, input limits and model assumptions. Results support an engineering discussion; they do not approve a design, process or production order.

After changing inputs, update the result before using it. Where a download or copy action is available, review that brief and attach or paste it into your enquiry. Opening Contact does not transfer these inputs or send a request.

How to use and share tool results

Use the current inputs and keep the assumptions

Start with the physical boundary named above the inputs. Enter your own values, or select Load example to explore the labeled teaching case. Example mode stays visible after edits so an illustrative calculation is not mistaken for measured project data. Clear for my inputs removes the sample values and starts a separate record.

Generate the result after completing every field. Changing any input invalidates the previous output and disables its download until you calculate again. Read the limitations below the numbers: a geometric or arithmetic result does not qualify a material, approve a circuit or establish manufacturing capability.

Download the current result if it helps the review. The text file contains inputs, outputs, assumptions and the tool version. It stays on your device; attach it manually to an enquiry if useful. No CAD is uploaded or interpreted, and nothing is automatically inserted into the Contact form. You can request an engineering review without completing this tool.

InputWhat to establish before using it
Review referenceUse a nonconfidential scope or revision.
Candidate A roleConfirm the role from the exact grade data.
Candidate B roleA brand name alone does not establish this role.
Candidate A exact grade / revisionDo not enter an assumed supplier equivalence.
Candidate B exact grade / revisionDocument the actual candidate.
Missing comparison evidenceKeep role, measurement method, mechanical and insulation requirements together.

Optional cost comparison from your own allowances

Use a quotation or a clearly labeled internal assumption for each input. Keep the quantity, construction and inspection scope the same when comparing alternatives. This uncalibrated planning model adds entered values; it contains no current market rates and does not issue a 勛圖tv quotation. You can contact the team without completing it.

Budget outputs are planning scenarios. Check the included costs and rate assumptions; a confirmed quotation requires a review of your files and scope.

Compare like-for-like thermal data

Once the role matches, compare thickness, direction, temperature and measurement method. Conductivity is not the same quantity as area-normalized impedance. Contact pressure and surface condition matter for many interface measurements.

Use thermal interface materials for impedance interpretation and high-conductivity PCB materials for layer comparisons. Keep the actual test boundary attached to each number. Do not create a brand ranking from values measured with different specimens and interfaces.

Retain electrical and mechanical requirements

Electrical insulation, compliance, adhesion, thickness tolerance and service environment can be as important as thermal transfer. A soft pad that fills a gap has different mechanical behavior from a bonded dielectric within a PCB.

List requirements by function and define how each will be verified. A thermally attractive candidate that cannot maintain the required geometry or insulation is not an equivalent. Conversely, an unnecessary property requirement can obscure a practical alternative if it was copied from the wrong product role.

Check processing compatibility

For an embedded or laminated material, review the fabrication process and permanent bond. For an interface product, review placement, compression, surface preparation and service handling. Keep assembly exposure and rework expectations in the qualification plan.

Do not extrapolate availability or process capability from an old comparison article. Ask for the current grade documentation and a supplier response covering the actual construction. Record unavailable evidence as a gap rather than filling it with a generic value.

Define a representative comparison test

Use the same geometry, source, downstream boundary and relevant environmental conditions. When comparing interfaces, control pressure and installed thickness. When comparing board dielectrics, use a suitable specimen and preserve the electrical requirements.

An A/B test should document what changed and what remained fixed. If both the material and the mounting method change, the result can support an assembly choice but cannot isolate the material property alone. Keep that distinction in the conclusion.

Compare commercial scope after technical scope

Include material form, dimensions, minimum order, processing, waste, verification and any qualification work. A sheet, pad and completed PCB do not share the same pricing boundary. Normalize the actual installed scope rather than only the price per area.

The optional budget worksheet adds entered allowances and does not supply vendor prices. Use a current quote or a clearly labeled planning assumption. Keep a proposed substitute visible as a separate candidate until its technical and sourcing evidence has been reviewed.

Release an approved alternative clearly

Record exact grade, revision, role, permitted thickness and the evidence supporting acceptance. Define what changes require another review. A note saying Bergquist or Laird is too broad when the products and functions have not been specified.

For the PCB construction route, continue to metal-core PCB. Bring the comparison sheet and the actual stack or mounting drawing to 勛圖tv so the enquiry concerns a precise material question rather than an unsupported brand substitution.

A material comparison that purchasing can use

Build a short candidate matrix around the required function: structural substrate, bonded electrical dielectric, conductor, expansion-control layer or external thermal interface. List exact grades and revisions. Keep an unsupported alternate in an open column rather than silently treating a brand family as an approved equivalent.

For each important property, record units, temperature, direction and test method. A nominal value without its conditions may be useful for initial screening but weak evidence for a release decision. Ask what range, tolerance or acceptance condition applies to the actual supplied form and completed construction.

Then review processing, mechanical integration and inspection. A material that meets a coupon property can still be unsuitable for the desired holes, bonding or assembly exposure. Ask the manufacturer to identify the practical construction and the verification needed before a production commitment.

Before release, place the chosen requirement, the proposed construction and the evidence in one review record. Separate measured values from supplier nominal data and from your own assumptions. If a value is unknown, identify who will obtain it and what decision depends on it. An empty field is more honest and more useful than an invented typical figure.

During an A/B comparison, change one relevant variable where possible. Preserve the original inputs and the reason for the change. If several things change together, describe the result as a comparison between complete configurations. Do not attribute the entire difference to one material or geometry feature without supporting evidence.

For a repeat order, confirm that the relevant drawing, material and process revisions still match the accepted configuration. Record alternatives explicitly. This small discipline helps purchasing avoid an apparently equivalent substitution that changes the engineering basis of the original decision.

Standards, source context and limits

Use the actual applicable document and edition for contractual requirements. Public technical resources help explain methods, but do not reproduce every condition in a licensed standard or qualify a particular 勛圖tv construction. Retain exact grades and test boundaries when reading supplier data.

The numeric examples on this page are illustrative inputs unless specifically identified otherwise. Archive photographs show relevant physical context; they are not current equipment, material-grade or inspection evidence. Original drawings explain the models and are not production drawings. Ask for the evidence and acceptance scope needed for your project rather than inferring approval from an image or calculator result.
