PCB budgetary quotes: preserve the assumptions
Build an early scenario from your own allowances—or export the open questions before any prices are known. Keep fabrication, assembly and purchasing scope visible.
What is a PCB budgetary quote?
A PCB budgetary quote is an early cost allowance tied to a stated design concept and purchasing scope. It helps decide whether a proposed board, assembly or sourcing route fits the project budget before all design details are frozen. It is not a confirmed offer, an authorization to build, or a guarantee that a later design will cost the same amount.
The useful output is a number with an explanation: which revision or concept it describes, what quantity is assumed, which work is included, what remains unknown and what could invalidate it. An unexplained low estimate can cause more trouble than an honest range. Separate bare-board manufacture from components, assembly, test development and logistics so a change does not disappear inside one total.
Build an early budget scenario
Enter your own low and high unit allowances and one-time allowances. Use the same currency and the same inclusion basis throughout. Leave a value blank when it is unknown; enter zero only when you deliberately mean no allowance for that item. The illustrative example uses invented teaching values, not ³Ô¹Ïtv prices.

The optional worksheet needs JavaScript. Use the readable checklist above or contact ³Ô¹Ïtv directly.
The arithmetic is scenario total = one-time allowance + quantity × unit allowance. The reported interval is the span between your low and high scenarios. It is not a statistical confidence interval and does not automatically include a reserve. The tool does not apply quantity discounts. When you change quantity, review whether the unit allowances still describe that purchasing case.
Make the budget basis short enough to review
Start with the product function and the design decision being evaluated. Record an approximate outline, layer count, intended material family, copper requirements and any important controlled features. For an assembly, add the expected BOM maturity, placement count or component mix where available, supply ownership and the test objective. Do not present an unfinished BOM as a released purchasing list.
| Budget input | Useful record | What changes the estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Configuration | Concept A, drawing revision or architecture date | Board split, extra layers or special interconnects |
| Quantity | Evaluation lot, pilot lot and repeat-order scenario | New batch size or a split delivery schedule |
| Material | Specified grade or explicitly provisional family | Different availability, construction or qualification needs |
| Assembly scope | Bare board, assembly labor, partial or full supply | Added components, coating, programming or test |
| Unknowns | Question, owner and next review milestone | Resolved assumptions replace the older allowance |
A budget record should name exclusions plainly. “PCB only, excluding components and assembly is clearer than “electronic build. Freight, taxes, fixtures, special reports and engineering work may be inside or outside the entered allowances. Include each item once. An unpriced exclusion should remain an open cost item rather than silently disappearing from the project budget.

Understand which design choices need a new price basis
Layer count, board dimensions, material construction and finished copper can influence manufacturing work and material utilization. Via technology, hole aspect ratio, controlled-depth operations and tight tolerances can change the process route. An estimate for a conventional through-hole board should not be reused for a sequentially laminated HDI design merely because the outline remains the same.
Special materials need a specific procurement discussion. “High frequency does not identify a laminate grade, copper option or available thickness. Likewise, an early rigid-flex concept may leave bend regions, stiffeners and rigid-to-flex transitions unresolved. Capture those assumptions explicitly. The purpose is to identify the decision worth discussing before layout becomes expensive to change, not to assign an unsupported universal percentage premium.
For assembly, a component's package, mounting method, sourcing route and verification needs can matter as much as the number of parts. A high placement count is not automatically expensive in the same way as a few unusual connectors or a custom functional fixture. Treat test development separately from running an already approved test on each board.
Altium's discussion of early budgetary quotes emphasizes considering fabrication, assembly and parts while the design can still change. Use that principle to ask targeted questions, then obtain a project-specific basis. The online scenario here does not import CAD, inspect your routing or infer a supplier's available production process.
Worked example: show the range and its exclusions
Suppose this record excludes freight and all assembly. Calling USD 1,450 the complete product budget would be incorrect. It is the high entered scenario for the stated bare-board scope. A separate freight allowance can be added to the project budget once its source and scope are known, but it should not be counted again if a later quote includes it.
Now change the planned quantity to 250 boards. Reusing the same rates produces a sensitivity calculation, not a volume quote. Material utilization, setup and purchasing terms may differ. Request updated quantity breaks rather than treating the tool as evidence of a discount. If a fixture can be reused, verify its ownership, condition and compatibility with the new revision before removing its cost.
A useful range has a reason for each endpoint. For example, one scenario may assume standard documentation, while another includes a defined additional report. Do not combine incompatible assumptions into a misleading lower bound. If one case covers a two-layer board and another covers a six-layer board, label them as separate design alternatives rather than uncertainty about one identical product.
Update the estimate as uncertainty is resolved
Version a budget when the design, quantity or scope changes. Keep the previous baseline available for comparison, but label it superseded. A brief change log can say “Rev B adds two layers and impedance coupons; fixture scope unchanged. That tells the team why the new amount differs and which earlier assumptions still apply.
Separate learning builds from repeat production. Prototype quantities may carry setup and experimentation that will not recur in exactly the same form. Conversely, a production build may require more durable fixtures, defined reports or a stable material supply plan. For the economics of prototype iterations, consult PCB prototype cost planning rather than forcing every activity into one board-price figure.
Set a review milestone based on the decision you need to make: after the outline is fixed, after the preliminary BOM is available, or before committing to tooling. A calendar date alone does not make an estimate mature. Record who will resolve each open question and what evidence will replace the assumption.

Turn an allowance into an actionable enquiry
Send the design information you have, list the quantities under consideration and state the question behind the budget. A useful request might ask whether a proposed stackup or material choice creates avoidable cost before routing is frozen. Attach the assumption record alongside any drawing, artwork or preliminary BOM so that a reviewer can identify the uncertainty.
If you already have quotations, preserve their basis and validity dates. Do not average offers with different component supply or testing scope. Use PCBA quote scope comparison when the purchasing decision includes components and assembly. A low labor-only offer and a full-turnkey offer are different products until their responsibilities are aligned.
The PCB and assembly quotation route provides a direct contact path and optional project preparation. You do not need to calculate a budget first. The downloaded worksheet remains on your device until you deliberately attach or send it; it is not automatically entered into the Contact form.
Questions about early estimates
How accurate is a budgetary quote?
Accuracy depends on the maturity and reliability of its input assumptions. No universal percentage is promised here. Record the cost basis, exclusions and conditions, then replace provisional values with an reviewed offer when the configuration is sufficiently defined.
Can I use the tool without unit prices?
Yes. Add the project reference, revision and quantity. Leave unknown allowances blank. The brief preserves that uncertainty and withholds the numerical total instead of treating missing prices as zero.
Does a higher allowance guarantee manufacturability?
No. Budget arithmetic cannot approve a stackup, qualify a material or resolve a design-rule conflict. Engineering feasibility and commercial cost must both be reviewed.
Should I give the supplier my entire product budget?
Share the scope and decision constraints useful for the enquiry. Keep internal financial assumptions separate when appropriate. The worksheet does not send inputs to analytics or to a supplier automatically.
