Controlled impedance PCB requirements

Specify the transmission line, approve the stackup and agree the measurement. Turn an impedance target into a fabrication requirement that can be reviewed and tested.

The impedance requirement has four parts
A target becomes reviewable when construction, limits and evidence are named together.

What belongs in a controlled impedance PCB requirement?

A controlled impedance PCB requirement identifies a transmission-line structure, its target impedance, permitted variation and verification method. It also identifies the signal layer, reference plane, material system and approved stackup revision. A note saying 50 ohms leaves too many decisions open: it does not distinguish a single-ended line from a differential pair, specify the reference conductor or explain which measurement will determine acceptance.

This page helps you prepare the manufacturing requirement. If you are still choosing trace geometry, start with the PCB impedance calculator and design guidance. A calculated geometry is an engineering input; the fabrication order additionally needs approval rules, construction details and evidence. Keeping those tasks connected prevents a calculation from being mistaken for a production guarantee.

The useful outcome is a short impedance table linked to a released drawing. A fabricator should be able to identify each controlled structure without guessing from a net name. Your receiving team should be able to match the test report to the same structure and revision. Unresolved fields are acceptable during quotation when they are explicitly identified and assigned for review.

AcceptanceAgreed tolerance, measurement method and reportingGives the measured result a decision context

Do not silently infer tolerance from a familiar interface name. A product engineer may specify a band that differs from a fabricator's routine process offering. The appropriate agreement depends on the channel budget, geometry, material variation and measurement uncertainty. Ask for a construction review before placing a tight tolerance into the drawing as an unconditional requirement.

A differential specification also needs the pair's relationship to neighboring copper. Edge-coupled and broadside structures are different. Coplanar ground, solder mask and nearby metal can matter. The impedance of each member alone is not simply interchangeable with differential impedance. For multiple structures on the same layer, use separate rows when width, gap, reference geometry or target differs.

One target, a specific transmission-line structure
Conceptual differential surface structure. The geometry, material model and reference conductor must correspond to the approved stackup.

Approve the construction before locking the geometry

The stackup review should identify the material grade, cured dielectric thickness, copper construction and relevant dielectric model. Material data may distinguish process Dk from design Dk; a number without its method or modeling context is incomplete. Ask which value and conditions support the field-solver result. A material-family name alone does not establish that two laminates produce the same geometry.

For a multilayer PCB stackup, balance total finished thickness with the local dielectric spacing that controls a particular line. Meeting the overall mechanical thickness does not prove that every signal-to-reference distance is correct. Core and pressed bonding layers perform different roles in the construction. Review the actual available build, not a stack of nominal catalog numbers.

State whether the supplier may adjust width or spacing during engineering review, and who approves the change. Compensation that preserves the agreed finished feature differs from changing a design requirement. An approval record should show the affected structure, old and proposed values, rationale and final revision. Reuse that record on repeat orders instead of relying on an untraceable email fragment.

TDR, coupons and the meaning of a report

Time-domain reflectometry evaluates impedance along an accessible transmission-line structure. A useful agreement identifies the method, coupon structure, measurement region and report content. The official provides a procedure reference for characteristic impedance by TDR. Verify the revision required by your contract; a method reference alone does not set your product's impedance tolerance.

A coupon is a deliberately accessible test structure fabricated with the board. It is useful only when its construction represents the feature under review. Preserve the relationship between coupon ID, panel or lot, signal layer and geometry. A coupon result is not a complete measurement of every routed path, connector transition or via discontinuity in the assembled product.

Discuss probe access and test length before fixing the coupon design. explains why practical coupon geometry and probing affect repeatable testing. Your report request can include target, measured result, structure identity, measurement setup and the agreed evaluation region. Ask how an outlying result will be investigated rather than accepting a pass label without context.

Keep coupon and product records connected
The coupon supports a defined measurement; it does not test the complete assembled signal channel.

Create a controlled impedance order brief

Use the worksheet to calculate the arithmetic acceptance band from your entered target and tolerance, then collect the structure and verification notes. Start with the illustrative example to see the output, or choose project mode to enter your own values. The worksheet does not predict impedance, read a CAD file or determine whether a supplier can hold the requested band.

For an arithmetic example, a 50 峏 target with an explicitly chosen 簣10% band gives 4555 峏. This example is not a default 勛圖tv capability or a recommendation for every interface. If the engineering requirement uses asymmetric limits or a different rule, state that separately in the drawing and have it reviewed instead of forcing it into a symmetric percentage field.

Using this tool & sharing results

Use the stated units, input limits and model assumptions. Results support an engineering discussion; they do not approve a design, process or production order.

After changing inputs, update the result before using it. Where a download or copy action is available, review that brief and attach or paste it into your enquiry. Opening Contact does not transfer these inputs or send a request.

How to use and share tool results

Download the brief and attach it with the fabrication files when requesting a review. The Contact page does not receive the worksheet automatically. The email action opens a draft for your review. No file upload, order or message is sent merely by calculating a result, and private project parameters are not added to analytics by this tool.

Which requirements can change cost or lead time?

Cost can change when the stackup requires an unusual laminate, thin dielectric, special copper, extra process control or additional evidence. The number of controlled structures can affect modeling and coupon work. A narrow tolerance may require more engineering discussion or a different construction. None of these effects can be reduced reliably to one universal percentage surcharge.

Separate recurring board cost from engineering and verification charges when comparing quotations. Ask whether the quote includes stackup review, coupon preparation, reporting, material restrictions and repeat-order records. A lower unit price with an undefined verification scope may represent a different deliverable. It is more useful to compare a common specification than two superficially similar board descriptions.

If the design is preliminary, send the intended layer count, target board thickness, interfaces, quantities and material constraints. Mark negotiable items, such as overall thickness or a preferred material family. This lets engineering explore an available construction before the route is frozen. For the complete production route, return to PCB Manufacturing.

A practical release and receiving sequence

First, freeze the named impedance structures and their requirements. Second, review the proposed stackup and modeled geometry together. Third, resolve any width, spacing or material changes before fabrication. Finally, agree coupon identification and the report package. These steps should share one board revision and a clear owner for open questions.

At receiving, confirm that the records describe the ordered revision and construction. Check that reported structures correspond to the drawing and that deviations have an approval reference. A discrepancy should trigger investigation of the specific requirement, measurement or identity issue. It should not be resolved by changing the target after looking at the result.

When a prototype changes, revisit the electrical structure even if the net names stay the same. Moving a reference plane, altering mask coverage, changing a laminate or reducing a pair gap can invalidate an earlier construction assumption. Preserve the previous report as history and create a new reviewed requirement for the modified build.

Questions before ordering

Does a 50 峏 trace always need the same width?

No. Width is only one part of the structure. Dielectric spacing, material behavior, finished copper, reference conductors and surface coatings influence the modeled line. Reuse a width only after confirming that the relevant construction is equivalent. A familiar width from a previous board is not sufficient evidence.

Is a passing coupon proof of signal integrity?

It is evidence for the specified coupon measurement. It does not automatically cover loss, crosstalk, return-path changes, launches or the complete assembled channel. Define the separate design and product tests needed for the actual interface. Keep the coupon's scope visible in the acceptance plan.

Can the fabricator choose the tolerance?

The supplier can propose a process offering, but the product requirement needs agreement. Record the accepted band in the order documents. If the proposed construction cannot support the requested requirement, resolve that issue before release. A quotation assumption should not quietly replace a design constraint.

What should I send for a useful quotation?

Send the board revision, fabrication data, layer stackup, impedance table, material restrictions, quantities and requested evidence. Identify which values are approved and which remain open. For a broader preflight review, use the PCB DFM checklist to connect impedance requirements with the rest of the manufacturing package.
