Calculate PCB assembly cost from a visible cost basis
This PCB assembly cost calculator adds your material, assembly, test and one-time allowances, then allocates the result over a requested board quantity. It also compares a second quantity using the same entered rates. It is useful for checking a budget or understanding setup allocation; it does not retrieve live component prices or issue a manufacturing quotation.
Start with your own supplier quote or documented planning allowances. If you do not have them yet, use the clearly marked illustrative example to understand the arithmetic, or request a quotation directly. A blank field means the cost is unknown, not that the work is free. Enter zero only when you have a reason to exclude that item from the selected scope.
For the explanation behind each bucket, read the PCB assembly cost guide. For an exact offer, send the available design files and identify the quantity, sourcing model and verification requirements. The calculator is optional; it should not delay a useful enquiry.
Compare two quantities with the same assumptions

The project view starts blank. Load illustrative example supplies invented values so you can follow the calculation; editing those values keeps the result marked as an example until you start your own project. A change to any input invalidates the previous result and download. The downloaded review records the inputs and limitations so a number does not become detached from its basis.
The comparison holds rates and fixed charges constant. Real quantity breaks can change component pricing, panel utilization, setup strategy, tooling or test economics. Obtain revised inputs when those conditions change. The second quantity is a sensitivity comparison, not a promise that a larger order will qualify for the same material rate or a lower selling price.
The formula and what each term means
The model separates costs incurred once for the quoted batch from allowances repeated for each board. Variable cost per board equals components plus bare PCB plus SMT placements multiplied by the entered placement rate, plus manual or through-hole work and verification. Batch total equals fixed allowances plus board quantity multiplied by variable cost. Allocated unit cost is the total divided by quantity.
| Input group | Basis | Avoid this double count |
|---|---|---|
| Components | Purchase allowance per assembled board | Adding parts already included in a turnkey unit quote |
| Bare PCB | Fabricated board allowance per unit | Adding panel price as though it were a unit price |
| SMT assembly | Placements per board your unit allowance | Repeating a full assembly charge in manual work |
| Manual / THT | Additional allowance per board | Counting the same insertion or soldering task twice |
| Verification | Agreed test and inspection allowance per board | Adding test already included in another line |
| Engineering / stencil | One-time batch allowance | Treating a fixed setup as a per-board charge |
| Fixture and other fixed | Agreed batch costs | Reusing tooling costs without checking the repeat-build basis |
This breakdown is deliberately simple and visible. It does not claim that all factories price every operation per placement. A manufacturer may quote a bundled service, minimum charge, setup per line or a process-specific operation. Translate a documented quote into consistent buckets only when doing so preserves what the quote actually includes.
Worked example: 100 boards compared with 500
The example uses $12 of components, $3 for the bare board, 100 SMT placements at $0.01 each, $1 of manual work and $1 of verification per board. Variable cost is therefore $18 per board. Engineering and stencil are assumed to be $200 and a fixture $100, producing $300 of fixed allowances. These are invented arithmetic inputs, not 勛圖tv rates.
At 100 boards, the batch total is $300 + 100 $18 = $2,100, or $21 per board. At 500 boards, it is $300 + 500 $18 = $9,300, or $18.60 per board. The setup allocation falls from $3 to $0.60 per unit. Total expenditure still increases because four hundred additional boards are being ordered.
The example does not include a volume discount. It also does not prove that buying 500 boards is a better business decision. Demand, design stability, obsolescence risk, cash availability and storage conditions affect that choice. A prototype expected to change after testing may be less expensive overall when built in a smaller quantity, despite a higher first-batch unit cost.
Build a defensible material allowance
Component cost starts with exact manufacturer part numbers, package variants and approved alternatives. A nominal value is insufficient for pricing a complete BOM. Identify quantities per board, the build quantity and purchasing constraints. A catalog unit price may depend on a different quantity tier, packing option, currency or location from the intended order.
A material allowance should identify its date and quantity basis. When a part requires a minimum order or full packing multiple, the cash purchase can exceed the installed demand. Decide whether the unused inventory is allocated to this project, retained for a committed repeat order or treated separately. Do not hide that difference in a small unexplained markup.
The BOM preparation guide separates fitted quantity from purchasing quantity. For manufacturer-specific handling information, use the relevant device documentation; are one authoritative example. Packing and condition can affect the preparation work required, but there is no universal extra percentage that applies to every supplied component.
Consigned material may reduce the assemblers invoice without reducing the customers total project cost by the same amount. Include what the customer paid for parts, any inward logistics and the agreed handling scope when comparing full-project economics. If you only want the assemblers invoice allowance, state that narrower boundary prominently.
Identify what the calculated total leaves out
The calculator has no automatic allowance for freight, tax, duties, exchange-rate movement, financing, warranty exposure or unexpected redesign. It does not predict production yield, component attrition, test failures or rework. Include an agreed cost once in the appropriate input, or keep it outside the calculation and identify it in the quotation discussion.
Firmware programming and functional testing need an explicit basis: image version, fixture, procedure, limits, cycle time and required record. Inspection and functional verification are different tasks. The test-method comparison helps define which evidence the project needs before a price comparison is meaningful.

For a repeat build, ask whether previous tooling, programs and inspection recipes remain valid for the current revision. A changed package, updated fixture or revised test method may create new setup work. Repeat order is not proof that all non-recurring charges disappear. Preserve the quotes assumptions and discuss changes before applying an old rate to a new release.
Use sensitivity to choose the next engineering question
If parts dominate the budget, first examine exact identities, approved sourcing and package choices. If manual operations dominate, review component placement, insertion access and the process route. If fixed charges dominate a very small batch, determine whether the fixture or setup is needed for this prototypes validation task. The appropriate question depends on the actual cost structure.
Use the cost-reduction comparison when a design change would cost money to implement. That tool adds change validation and obsolete inventory to the decision. This page stays focused on the cost of a chosen build; it does not recommend that engineering changes be accepted solely because they reduce a spreadsheet total.
Keep the product acceptance requirement constant when comparing alternatives. A lower quote excluding programming, functional test or traceability is not automatically more efficient than a higher quote that includes them. Ask each supplier to identify inclusions, exclusions, responsibility boundaries and validity conditions before choosing between totals.
Turn a budget into a useful quotation request
Download the current budget review and attach it manually with your source files. Identify which allowances came from a supplier, which are internal estimates and which remain unknown. Send the board revision, quantity breaks, target delivery need, sourcing responsibilities and expected verification. Preliminary files are welcome when their status is clear.
Use the turnkey versus consigned responsibility guide if material ownership is unresolved. 勛圖tvs PCB assembly service is the commercial route for reviewing the actual build. The combined PCB/PCBA quote page remains available for projects that also need a separate fabrication scope; this calculator does not replace that broader enquiry workflow.
The email action opens a draft containing the calculation summary; it does not send a message or upload files. Contact is a separate route and does not automatically receive your entries. Attach the downloaded review and current manufacturing files so the receiving team can assess both the arithmetic and the engineering scope.
PCB assembly calculator questions
Is this an instant factory quotation? No. It is arithmetic using user-entered allowances, with a clearly marked demonstration option. A factory quotation depends on the released files, material availability, process, testing, quantity and commercial conditions.
Why are there no default project prices? Unverified default prices can appear more certain than the inputs justify. The example explains the formula; your own project starts blank so unknown costs are not silently treated as reliable rates.
Can I calculate assembly labor only? Yes. Enter zero for deliberately excluded material items and identify the result as assembly-only. Do not compare that subtotal directly with a turnkey price containing components and bare boards.
Does the result include the cost of failed boards? No automatic yield or scrap factor is modeled. Discuss acceptance, process loss, rework and material ownership with the supplier. Any budget allowance you add should have an explicit basis and should not be counted twice.
