PCB potting services need a released protection requirement
PCB potting services apply a specified compound around an electronic assembly within a defined cavity or protected region. The commercial request should identify the material, fill boundary, interfaces that must remain accessible, preparation requirements and acceptance evidence. Pot the board is not enough to establish a repeatable process or a meaningful quotation.
The decision changes what can be inspected, repaired or tested later. Review the assembly before committing it to an irreversible or difficult-to-remove fill. Some materials remain relatively soft, while others form a rigid encapsulation; the actual formulation and cured condition matter. Do not infer repairability, insulation or environmental performance from the generic word resin.
This page focuses on preparing and controlling a purchased service. The PCB potting process guide explains cavity definition, material behavior and process failure mechanisms. For an earlier architecture decision, compare potting and conformal coating. 勛圖tv can review your intended scope; availability of a particular compound, dispensing method, fixture and qualification activity must be confirmed for the project.
Define the service boundary before choosing equipment
State whether the request covers potting an already tested PCBA, supplying the PCBA and enclosure, or delivering a complete verified module. Identify who owns the material selection, product design, process approval and final acceptance. A supplier may control dispensing while the OEM retains responsibility for the environmental requirement and product qualification. Put those responsibilities into the review instead of leaving them implicit.
| Requirement | What the RFQ should state | Question to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Protected assembly | Drawing revision, BOM and enclosure or fixture model | What configuration will be processed? |
| Material | Exact manufacturer, product, approved revision and alternatives | Is the compound approved for all contacted surfaces? |
| Fill geometry | Level, net volume, coverage and excluded regions | Which features remain open or inspectable? |
| Process basis | Preparation, mixing, dispensing and cure references | What evidence supports the proposed process? |
| Verification | Pre-fill, post-cure and product-level requirements | Who accepts results and deviations? |
| Delivery | Quantity, packaging, identification and records | What exactly is included in the service price? |
A material's technical data and safety information guide the process review, but they do not establish that the completed product meets every intended requirement. Check the exact grade and document revision. The illustrates why cure systems, processing properties and material families must be compared at product level rather than treated as interchangeable.

Mark interfaces that potting must not disable
Define the fill surface using a controlled datum and tolerance, not only a sketch with a shaded rectangle. Include the net space occupied by the compound and the relevant board or component displacement. Show connectors, mating cavities, adjustment points, vents, pressure sensors, switches, optical windows and mounting surfaces that require access or masking. A small unmarked opening can become a difficult rework problem after cure.
Consider the cable or harness entry as an interface, including material compatibility, movement and potential liquid paths. A filled enclosure does not automatically seal a cable construction or connector interface. If external wires are part of the module, coordinate them with the wire harness assembly requirements so routing, strain relief and the fill boundary agree.
Identify inspection access before the fill is applied. If programming, calibration, serial marking or electrical probing is needed, state when it occurs and how the result is retained. A post-cure functional test may be valuable, but it cannot recover every hidden assembly observation. Keep pre-process acceptance separate from post-process acceptance and define how failures are handled at each stage.
Plan a lot from an approved dispense quantity
This worksheet starts with the approved net dispense volume per unit and the material's relevant mixed density. It plans the total mixed mass, whole units per batch, a final partial batch and an optional cost allowance. It does not duplicate the geometric cavity calculator on the potting process page. Obtain a supported unit volume there or from your controlled CAD and process trial first.
Potting lot material and allowance planner
The model uses mass per unit = volume mixed density (1 + additional allowance). Whole units per batch equal the available mass after fixed batch residue divided by mass per unit, rounded down. Required batches are rounded up. The final batch is prepared for the remaining units plus its fixed residue; the model does not assume that all batches must be mixed at their maximum size.
For a hypothetical order of 100 units, use 20 mL per unit, density 1.2 g/mL and 5% additional dispense allowance. That gives 25.2 g per unit. A process-approved maximum batch of 300 g with 20 g residue allows 11 whole units. Ten batches are needed: nine with 11 units and the final one with one unit. Total mixed material is 2.72 kg, including 200 g of batch residue. These example values do not describe an approved compound or process.
The maximum batch mass is a required process input, not a calculated safe amount. Pot life, cure reaction, exotherm, equipment, temperature and operator sequence require material-specific review and validation. The A:B split accepts a mass ratio only. Never copy a volume ratio into those fields. Purchased kit sizes, minimum order quantities, container residue and shelf-life inventory need separate procurement accounting.
Approve the formulation and contacted surfaces
Specify the exact compound rather than only epoxy, polyurethane or silicone. Review the relevant mechanical, thermal, electrical and processing properties under their documented conditions. A low-stress material, a thermally conductive material and a material chosen for chemical exposure solve different problems. No single property proves suitability for every component, enclosure and environment.
Consider adhesion or release behavior at the board, solder mask, components, labels, wires and enclosure. Check whether any contacted material or residue can interfere with the chosen cure system. The product review may require representative coupons or assemblies. Retain the preparation and cure history with the result so a successful trial can inform a controlled process rather than remain an unexplained observation.
The is an official starting point for available material documentation. Use the applicable current technical and safety data for the exact grade. This page intentionally supplies no universal mixing, heating or vacuum recipe because those instructions would be unreliable across unrelated materials and equipment.
Agree the process controls and hold points
Before dispensing, verify the correct assembly revision, material identity, approved storage condition and required preparation. Confirm that masking and fixtures protect the specified interfaces. During processing, retain the required material lot, mix basis, equipment or setup identification and timing records. After cure, release the assembly according to the agreed inspection and test requirements.
Define how the fill level, coverage and any internal void concern will be evaluated. Surface appearance cannot show every hidden feature. A mass check may be useful for consistency but does not by itself prove complete wetting or the absence of critical voids. Select methods and acceptance criteria that address the actual risk and identify whether they apply to process qualification, production sampling or every delivered unit.
The cure condition must also match the approved process. An elapsed timer alone is not evidence that the material experienced the intended temperature or completed the relevant property development. Record what must be controlled and measured for the selected material and equipment. Establish a disposition process for interrupted cure, incorrect mix or other deviations before a production lot is affected.

Explain the drivers behind a potting quotation
Material consumption is only one part of service cost. Fixtures, masking, preparation, dispensing, cure handling, inspection and testing may dominate at low volumes or with difficult geometry. A compound with lower price per kilogram can require more processing time or create a different verification burden. Compare the total approved route rather than selecting solely by resin price.
The worksheet's optional allowance combines user-entered mixed-material cost per kilogram, process-and-test allowance per unit and a one-time setup amount. Using the illustrative 2.72 kg above, an entered material allowance of 40 currency units per kilogram, 3 per processed unit and 200 for setup gives 608.8 for the lot. This demonstrates the formula; it is not a 勛圖tv quote or a market benchmark.
Keep the base PCBA, housing, qualification, freight and taxes outside that total unless your source explicitly includes them. For a material-only exercise, enter zero in the price fields and interpret the output only as quantity planning. Zero does not mean production is free. Confirm purchased pack sizes and shelf-life constraints before converting mixed-mass arithmetic into an order to a material supplier.
Qualify the protected construction and retain the record
Environmental and thermal performance belong to the completed configuration. The board, material, enclosure, cable entries and external interfaces work together. Define the exposures, operating state and acceptance conditions for the intended product. Neither the name potting nor a material listing automatically assigns an ingress rating or qualifies the assembled module.
For ongoing production, use electronic contract manufacturing to discuss configuration control, material availability, revision changes and delivery records. A change in resin, cure schedule, enclosure surface or component height may require a new engineering decision. Record which changes trigger review and who can accept the result.
Send the assembly files, fill drawing, exact compound reference, expected quantities, acceptance requirements and unresolved decisions through Contact. Include any existing process trial evidence and identify its relevance to the proposed build. The downloaded worksheet can help explain batch assumptions, but it remains an attachment you choose to send and does not replace controlled process documents.
Questions about PCB potting services
Does potting automatically make a module waterproof?
No. The complete product, including connectors, cable entries and enclosure interfaces, needs evidence against its stated exposure requirements. A material choice is only part of that design.
Can the worksheet calculate a safe batch from pot life?
No. Enter a maximum mixed batch already supported by the approved process. The tool performs mass and quantity arithmetic; it does not predict reaction temperature, working time or cure behavior.
Is conformal coating simply a thinner potting service?
No. The physical coverage, masking, process and service implications differ. Compare the required protection route first, then define the material and process for that route.
