PCB reliability testing starts with a failure mechanism and a mission
PCB reliability testing evaluates how a defined construction or assembly behaves under specified stresses and monitoring conditions. A credible plan connects the intended environment, a plausible failure mechanism, a representative test article and a decision rule. Ordering a long list of tests without that connection can consume samples and time while leaving the important application question unanswered.
Qualification and production screening have different purposes. Production electrical test can check specified continuity and isolation conditions at the time of test. AOI, X-ray, ICT and functional testing provide other forms of inspection or operational evidence. None should automatically be relabeled as proof of service life. Use the PCB test-method selection resource for production-method comparisons; use this page to build a qualification evidence plan.
Match the mechanism to the evidence route
| Question under review | Candidate evidence to discuss | Necessary interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Interconnect fatigue | Representative coupon, controlled cycling and continuity monitoring | Which interconnect failed and whether the coupon represents the build |
| Moisture-related leakage | Relevant test vehicle, humidity/bias exposure and electrical monitoring | Whether materials, geometry and process conditions represent the question |
| Assembly thermal damage | Documented preconditioning with structural and electrical comparison | What changed during assembly exposure and at which interface |
| Mechanical or solder-joint fatigue | Representative assembly, mounting and stress with suitable monitoring | Whether the failure mode matches the intended product mechanism |
These are planning routes, not prescribed test conditions. The identifies methods such as thermal cycling, continuity and insulation-resistance evaluation. Method selection, severity, specimen design and acceptance remain project-specific. Confirm the exact controlled document and revision before procurement or laboratory work begins.
A qualification plan should also identify what is outside scope. For example, an interconnect coupon does not reproduce every component attachment or enclosure load. An assembly vibration study does not automatically establish laminate moisture performance. Clear exclusions make the evidence more useful because the next reviewer can see which questions remain open.
Describe service conditions in a form that can guide a test
Start with the operating environment and expected transitions. Record relevant temperature changes, humidity exposure, electrical bias, mechanical loads and the assembly's mounting arrangement. Distinguish normal operation from transport, storage, installation and abnormal conditions that the design must tolerate. If these conditions are not yet known, identify the assumption owner and when the missing information will be supplied.
Do not translate a vague phrase such as industrial grade into a fixed stress sequence. Two industrial products can have very different thermal cycles, condensation exposure and mechanical constraints. Similarly, a market label does not establish a statistical reliability target. The test plan needs a stated objective, such as comparing two constructions, checking a contractual qualification requirement or investigating an observed failure mechanism.
Changes in mission can invalidate an earlier evidence argument. A board qualified in a sheltered environment may require additional review when moved near a heat source or exposed to different mounting loads. Keep the mission statement with the design revision so that later product changes can be assessed against the actual qualification basis rather than a generic tested label.
Select a specimen that represents the mechanism
A test coupon should represent the construction features that matter to the investigation. Record material system, layer structure, copper, via geometry and fabrication sequence as applicable. If the concern involves a particular interconnect interface, show how the coupon includes that interface and how it is electrically monitored. A convenient spare coupon is not automatically an appropriate test vehicle.
For assembled-board evaluation, components, solder joints, mounting and enclosure constraints may be central to the failure mechanism. A bare-board test cannot substitute for those features. Conversely, testing a complete expensive product may be unnecessary when a deliberately designed coupon can isolate a specific fabrication question. Choose the specimen from the decision you need, then justify its limitations.
Retain traceability from each specimen to the manufacturing lot and any preconditioning. Identify comparison groups and controls before starting. If the specimens come from several lots or constructions, preserve those identities in the results rather than pooling them into one average. Otherwise a real difference between populations can disappear in the summary.

Agree preconditioning, monitoring and stop conditions together
Assembly exposure can influence the condition presented to a subsequent reliability test. State whether the specimens are as-fabricated, assembled, reworked or deliberately preconditioned. Include the sequence and evidence for those operations. A result from an untouched bare coupon should not be represented as equivalent to one from a construction after repeated assembly exposure.
Define the stress settings, ramp or transition behavior, dwell, duration and monitoring appropriate to the selected method. Also define the quantity being measured, sampling rate and failure threshold. If an intermittent connection is the concern, an occasional end-point measurement may answer a different question from continuous monitoring. Agree the distinction before the test so an apparently passing report does not conceal an unobserved interval.
Include stop conditions and a plan for unexpected behavior. Some failures justify immediate preservation and analysis; continuing to stress a damaged specimen can obscure the initial mechanism. The discusses how specimen condition and material damage can complicate interpretation. Use such technical work to frame questions, while the approved project procedure governs the actual test.
Separate sample count from confidence and coverage
The number of specimens needs a rationale tied to the study objective. A small comparison study can help distinguish candidate constructions without proving a population failure rate. A qualification requirement may specify its own sampling and acceptance rules. A life-estimation study needs an appropriate statistical model and failure data. These are different designs, even if they use similar equipment.
Retain censored observations and stop reasons where relevant. A specimen that survived until the planned test end is not the same as one tested until failure. A unit removed because an instrument malfunctioned should not be silently counted as a successful survivor. Record the actual exposure completed and the reason each specimen left the study.
Avoid converting accelerated test hours directly into service years without a validated relationship and applicable assumptions. Stress acceleration can change the dominant mechanism, and an unsupported conversion can create false confidence. This page and its tool do not calculate a survival probability or warranted life from a few user-entered test conditions.

Build a qualification evidence brief
Reliability qualification evidence planner
Choose the failure mechanism, describe the mission and identify the test article. The planner proposes an evidence route for discussion and lists unresolved severity, monitoring, sampling and failure-analysis items. Add the decision owner so the result has a destination beyond send to a laboratory. The output is a requirements brief, not an approved test procedure.
The worksheet does not populate a default temperature range, humidity, cycle count or bias. Those values can look authoritative while being unrelated to the product. Instead, it asks whether the governing conditions have been justified and documented. Download the brief and attach it manually with drawings and relevant specifications when requesting a review.
You can also contact 勛圖tv directly when the test approach is still being defined. The form does not automatically receive planner inputs, and the email action opens an editable draft. No new analytics events collect the entered mission, specimen or project reference.
Example: comparing two interconnect constructions
Consider an illustrative design change in which two candidate interconnect constructions are being compared. A useful study would state what is changing, what remains controlled and which failure mechanism should distinguish the options. It would identify representative coupons, fabrication lots, assembly preconditioning and the monitoring arrangement. Testing two unmatched boards from different histories would make the comparison much harder to interpret.
Before the trial, agree how resistance changes or discontinuities are detected and what happens after a threshold is reached. Preserve failed specimens for localization and structural analysis. A lower number of cycles to an electrical event may indicate a meaningful difference, but the physical failure location still matters. If one candidate fails in a different mechanism, a simple ranking by cycles can obscure the design question.
Report the raw observations and the limits of the conclusion. The study might support selecting a candidate for a larger qualification program without establishing a service-life guarantee. That is a useful result when stated honestly. This example is not a customer case or a claim that a particular test is included in every 勛圖tv order.
Close the loop with failure evidence and controlled changes
When a failure occurs, connect the electrical or functional observation to physical evidence. Preserve timing, specimen orientation, affected connection and any changes in test conditions. Choose analysis locations from the recorded symptom rather than cutting a convenient cross-section. Keep preparation artifacts and uncertainty in view when interpreting a local image.
If the concern is structural separation, continue to the PCB delamination investigation guide. If residue-related electrical behavior is involved, the ionic contamination testing guide explains method boundaries. Those pages support particular investigation tasks; this page remains the owner of the overall qualification plan and evidence argument.
Corrective action should state what changed, why it addresses the supported mechanism and what revalidation is required. A passing repeat test without a controlled change record is weaker than a traceable before-and-after comparison. Also consider whether the change affects other requirements, such as impedance, assembly access or material availability.
Quote the evidence program separately from routine production checks
Submit the board revision, construction, mission, suspected mechanism, applicable documents and intended decision through Contact. Identify which tests are mandatory and which are proposed for engineering discussion. Confirm laboratory availability, specimen requirements, destructive work, reporting scope and lead time before placing the order.
The PCB manufacturing service can be reviewed alongside the qualification scope, while quality assurance defines the wider evidence and release framework. Routine production inspection, optional qualification and failure analysis should remain distinguishable line items. That makes quotations comparable and prevents a general quality statement from being mistaken for a specific completed test.
Reliability qualification questions
Does an electrical test prove long-term PCB reliability?
No. It establishes results for the specified electrical checks at the tested condition. Qualification needs evidence connected to the intended stresses and failure mechanisms.
Can a coupon replace a complete product test?
Sometimes a coupon is appropriate for a specific construction question. Its representation and limitations must be justified; it does not automatically cover component joints, mounting or enclosure behavior.
Does a larger cycle count always mean a better design?
Not by itself. Compare equivalent specimens, conditions, monitoring and failure mechanisms. Different damage modes or preconditioning can make a simple cycle-count ranking misleading.
What is needed before requesting a qualification quote?
Provide the mission, specimen definition, method or requirement, severity if established, sample rationale, monitoring and reporting expectations. Identify who will interpret the results and authorize the next decision.
Bring the observation and supporting evidence together
