1080 prepreg: from material to finished board
A task sequence for this page. It is an explanatory diagram, not a production record.

What is 1080 thin prepreg?

1080 prepreg combines a 1080 woven glass style with a specified resin system and resin-content option. It is often considered when planning a thin bonding construction, but the style number does not establish a single finished thickness or dielectric constant. A useful design begins with the required finished spacing and the supplier's construction data, then checks the electrical and manufacturing implications.

Thin dielectric distances make relative variation easy to overlook. An allowance that appears small in micrometers can be a substantial percentage of the intended spacing. This page therefore concentrates on dimensional sensitivity and its consequences for an electrical model. It does not present a glass designation as an impedance solution or a universal high-frequency material.

The PCB prepreg overview explains the material's bonding role. If you are deciding between two complete construction proposals, use the 1080 versus 2116 comparison. That keeps this page focused on the thin-spacing task rather than repeating a general catalogue of fabric styles.

A thin style still has multiple construction options

The lists 1080 examples at 64% resin / 0.077 mm and 72% / 0.102 mm. These are product-specific references, not universal design defaults.

Keep the source's definition of thickness with the value. Incoming sheet thickness, a supplier test-construction figure and the finished copper-to-copper spacing in a specific board are different records. A design review should identify how the proposed stackup connects those records rather than silently replacing one with another.

InputRequired definitionWhy a thin bondline makes it important
Finished spacingBetween the named copper surfacesIt is the dimension used by the electrical structure
Dimensional allowanceBasis, sign and sourceA small absolute change can be a large percentage
Resin constructionGrade, resin content and ply scheduleThe style name leaves these unspecified
Adjacent copperThickness and local patternThe bondline must accommodate actual topography
Dielectric dataConstruction, method and frequencyA bulk catalogue value may not be design Dk
VerificationLocations and acceptance basisA nominal model is not a finished-board measurement

Do not tighten a specification merely by displaying more decimal places. A converted value can look precise while its source remains a rounded typical figure. Use the agreed controlling units and ask which tolerance is supported for the finished construction before releasing the drawing.

Examine the interval before tuning the circuit

Suppose the proposed finished dielectric spacing is 80 繕m with a user-supplied worst-case allowance of 簣10 繕m. The interval is 7090 繕m, and the allowance is 12.5% of nominal. This does not say the fabricator has such a tolerance; it shows why the allowance must be known before treating 80 繕m as an exact electrical-model input.

The lower and upper spacing corners can affect a transmission-line or plane-pair model differently. A design optimized at only the nominal point may need further review when the actual permitted range is considered. Use the same physical reference surfaces in the stackup, field solver and inspection plan so that the corner analysis is meaningful.

An interval calculation is not a statistical yield forecast. Worst-case limits, sample distributions and process capability are different concepts. Do not apply root-sum-square arithmetic to unrelated limits without a justified statistical model. For the simple worksheet below, the entered allowance is treated as a bound and is never converted into a probability of acceptance.

Explore thickness sensitivity with an ideal plane pair

The worksheet uses an ideal parallel-plate capacitance model to make the effect of spacing visible. Enter the finished spacing, its allowance, overlapping area and applicable homogeneous relative permittivity. The result demonstrates sensitivity; it is not a PCB decoupling simulation, transmission-line impedance calculator or insulation qualification.

How to use and share tool results

Worked example: capacitance changes across the interval

With an illustrative 100 mm簡 overlap, relative permittivity of 4 and an 80 繕m spacing, the ideal capacitance is approximately 44.27 pF. At 70 繕m it becomes about 50.60 pF; at 90 繕m it becomes about 39.35 pF. These values follow C = 庰庰廘x/h with homogeneous material, complete overlap and no fringing.

The asymmetry around the nominal capacitance is useful to notice. Capacitance varies inversely with spacing, so equal positive and negative spacing changes do not produce equal capacitance changes. Increasing the overlap area doubles the ideal capacitance if all other inputs stay fixed, but real plane structures can have cutouts, vias and frequency-dependent behavior outside this simple model.

The illustrative permittivity of 4 is not assigned to all 1080 prepreg. Replace it with an appropriate value for the modeled structure, including its source and conditions. If the intended task is a routed signal, move to the PCB impedance tool with the actual trace geometry and reference planes. Do not reuse the plane-pair result as a trace impedance estimate.

Keep material Dk and the circuit model connected

A material supplier may publish dielectric measurements for several constructions and frequencies. The circuit model may instead require a design Dk calibrated to a particular transmission-line geometry, or an effective permittivity that includes the field distribution. Identify which quantity is being used and why it fits the calculation.

For differential routing, spacing to a reference plane is only part of the geometry. Pair spacing, conductor width, copper thickness, finished profile and the surrounding dielectric structure also matter. A thin 1080 bondline cannot independently guarantee a target impedance, low skew or low insertion loss. Keep those performance requirements separate and assign an appropriate analysis or measurement to each.

If the fabricator changes the proposed pressed spacing, update the electrical model before approving the revision. A revised trace width may interact with routing density or manufacturing limits, so the change can propagate beyond a single stackup cell. Preserve the final model assumptions with the approved construction rather than relying on an email thread that may be unavailable for a repeat order.

Thin dielectric design must include local features

Review copper topography on both sides of the bondline. Large clearances, thick copper features and abrupt changes in local density can create questions that an average thickness does not answer. Identify the locations that control the design and request the fabricator's proposed construction and evidence for them.

Handling is also part of the material context. The highlights careful handling of fragile prepreg, particularly high-resin fine fabrics. The exact instructions must match the material actually ordered. Do not transfer a procedure from one resin system merely because both products use 1080 glass.

If the design needs an even thinner construction, the 106 prepreg review focuses on entered local minimum spacing and evidence. It is not an automatic upgrade path. A thinner candidate should answer a defined design requirement rather than being selected solely because a smaller number appears more advanced.

Evaluate the full construction cost, not thinness alone

Material price per square meter, total ply count, purchased sheet format and panel utilization all affect a scoped prepreg allowance. A construction with two thin plies may use a different purchased area than a single-ply alternative. Processing and required verification should remain explicit rather than being hidden inside an unexplained thin prepreg premium.

Budget outputs are planning scenarios. Check the included costs and rate assumptions; a confirmed quotation requires a review of your files and scope.

After changing inputs, update the result before using it. Where a download or copy action is available, review that brief and attach or paste it into your enquiry. Opening Contact does not transfer these inputs or send a request.

How to use and share tool results

Use the cost worksheet only when the rate and scope can be documented. It calculates purchased prepreg area and a subtotal for entered material, processing and setup allowances. It does not estimate a current market price from the 1080 label. The result is especially useful for explaining why a change in ply count affects a budget even when board dimensions and ordered quantity remain unchanged.

For a completed-board quotation, provide the approved stackup or the performance requirements that a proposal must meet. Ask the supplier to identify material assumptions, exceptions and verification scope. A low material-only subtotal does not establish that the full board offer is lower or that the construction is qualified for the application.

Make the finished requirement easy to verify

Name the controlled dielectric distance on the drawing and identify the layer pair. State the nominal value, tolerance and any critical local minimum separately when both are required. Explain whether the listed glass schedule is mandatory or whether documented alternatives are allowed. Avoid mixing a preferred catalogue construction with an unachievable finished tolerance.

Close the 1080 construction review
Original review workflow, not a claim of approval or a certified procedure.

Agree the evidence needed to close the review: a proposed stackup, a consistent electrical model and any required dimensional or coupon records. The PCB manufacturing service can receive those requirements directly. The tool is optional, and a downloaded brief can be attached manually; it does not submit a quotation request or transfer your inputs automatically.

Questions about 1080 thin prepreg

Is 1080 always thinner than 2116?

Compare the exact options and complete ply arrangements. Product tables often offer different thickness ranges, but the glass names alone do not establish the finished bondline in your board. Different resin-content options and ply counts change the comparison.

Does thin prepreg always improve impedance control?

No universal improvement follows from thinness. The target geometry, available trace widths, dimensional variation and process capability all matter. Review the complete electrical structure and the agreed verification method.

Can the capacitance tool predict decoupling performance?

No. It illustrates one geometric sensitivity with ideal homogeneous plates. Real frequency-dependent plane behavior, connections, spreading inductance and component placement require an appropriate circuit or field model.

What is the most useful information for a thin-bondline RFQ?

Provide the layer pair, finished dielectric distance and tolerance, copper geometry, material restrictions, impedance requirements and quantity. Identify which requirement is driving the thin construction so that the fabricator can propose a meaningful alternative if needed.
