2116 prepreg: from material to finished board
A task sequence for this page. It is an explanatory diagram, not a production record.

Specify 2116 as a complete bonding construction

2116 prepreg is a resin-impregnated glass construction identified partly by its 2116 fabric style. The fabric number does not specify one resin content, pressed thickness or dielectric constant. To use it in a PCB stackup, name the resin system and construction, define the finished bondline and review the copper surfaces that it must bond.

The most useful design question is not whether 2116 is a standard material. It is whether a particular 2116 option can meet your finished thickness, electrical and local filling requirements under an approved process. This page concentrates on the connection between copper topography and construction review, while the PCB prepreg guide explains the broader material role.

A request that specifies only 2116 PP leaves important decisions to interpretation. Add the supplier's complete material designation, resin-content option, ply schedule and controlled document revision. Where equivalent constructions are allowed, state the performance and dimensional requirements that an alternative must satisfy instead of implying that all 2116 products are interchangeable.

Resin content and thickness belong to a named product

The lists 2116 examples at 50% resin / 0.120 mm and 57% / 0.138 mm. These belong to that product, not a universal 2116 specification.

When a supplier uses a designation such as SR or HR, request its actual definition and corresponding construction data. A purchasing abbreviation should not replace resin content, material identity or the agreed pressed-thickness basis. Different suppliers may organize their catalogue options differently, so a label carried over from an old quotation can be misleading.

Construction fieldEngineering useCommon interpretation error
Resin system and gradeEstablish the actual bonding materialTreating 2116 as a full material name
Resin contentIdentify the ordered construction optionReading percentage as available flow volume
Pressed thickness basisModel the complete bondlineSubstituting an uncured sheet measurement
Ply count and orientationDefine the layup proposalAssuming one ply and two plies behave identically
Adjacent copperDescribe local topographyUsing only a board-wide coverage average
Evidence requirementDefine what the build must demonstrateAssuming the catalogue row approves the PCB

Keep these fields together in the stackup record. A resin-content change may also change the dimensional or electrical assumptions, so it should be reviewed as a construction change. The purpose is a reproducible board specification, not an unnecessarily rigid list that prevents useful supplier proposals.

Why copper distribution changes the question

Etching leaves copper features above the surrounding substrate surface. Between those features are recessed regions that must be considered during bonding. For one patterned surface with a fixed copper height, less retained copper means more recess volume over the same mapped area. That geometric statement is useful, but it is only the beginning of a lamination review.

The opposing surface can have its own copper pattern, and local concentrations matter. Two layers with the same average retained-copper percentage can distribute their copper very differently. One may have evenly spaced routing; another may have a nearly solid plane beside a large cleared region. A single percentage cannot distinguish those layouts.

Identify the areas most likely to control the construction: dense connector regions, broad copper clearances, thick copper features and abrupt changes in local pattern. Provide the actual artwork rather than a verbal description alone. Ask the fabricator to review the proposed bonding material and process against those locations and state the agreed finished requirements.

Different copper patterns leave different recess volumes
Conceptual cross-sections; the arithmetic uses retained area fraction. No resin flow or sufficiency is predicted.

Compare copper recess volume without inventing a flow model

The worksheet compares two retained-copper coverage scenarios for one surface. It uses the same mapped area and copper height for both. The result is ideal geometric recess volume in mm糧, not a required resin quantity or a prediction that a 2116 option will fill the pattern successfully.

How to use and share tool results

Worked example: equal area, different retained copper

Take an illustrative 100 cm簡 region with 35 繕m copper height. Its area is 10,000 mm簡 and the copper height is 0.035 mm. With 70% retained copper, the recessed fraction is 30%, giving 10,000 0.035 0.30 = 105 mm糧 of ideal recess volume. At 30% retained copper, the corresponding value is 245 mm糧.

The difference is 140 mm糧 on that single modeled surface. It shows why unchanged board dimensions do not imply an unchanged bonding task after artwork revisions. It does not show how much resin the glass carries, how the opposite surface interacts, what flows outside the panel or how the material behaves during cure. Those missing factors prevent the worksheet from acting as a lamination simulator.

Use the result to frame a specific question: These regions changed from approximately 70% to 30% retained copper at the same copper height; does the approved 2116 construction remain suitable? Attach the actual layers and identify the locations. That is more actionable than asking whether 2116 has enough resin without describing the geometry.

Connect the proposal with finished thickness

Define the reference surfaces for the required dielectric distance. If a stackup uses a value measured between copper surfaces, keep that convention throughout the electrical and mechanical records. Do not add a copper-height correction to a supplier value that already accounts for it. When the convention is unclear, request clarification before calculating the total board thickness.

Resin content does not establish the final thickness independently of the approved process and construction context. The explicitly treats processing guidance as a starting point that the fabricator must adapt and verify. That principle is useful when reviewing a proposal: a published recipe is not proof that the actual board will meet its requirements.

For process sequencing, use the PCB lamination process guide. This 2116 page stays focused on construction inputs and the questions they create. The production team must qualify the actual process, and the purchasing agreement must identify the evidence required for the delivered board.

When to compare 2116 with another construction

If the required spacing cannot be achieved with the proposed 2116 option, evaluate complete alternatives rather than changing one number. A thinner construction may use a different glass style, a different resin-content option or a different ply arrangement. Each candidate needs its own dimensional basis and process review.

The 1080 versus 2116 comparison aligns the records before doing arithmetic. It is particularly useful when two thin plies are proposed instead of one thicker ply. If the target is a larger contribution to total board thickness, the 7628 construction guide addresses symmetric stack accounting. Neither route assumes that equivalent sums mean equivalent fabrication behavior.

Avoid changing resin systems merely to keep a familiar fabric number. A project may care more about the finished electrical or thermal requirement than the style itself, or it may require a tightly controlled qualified construction. State which case applies. An explicit substitution rule prevents late disagreement between design, purchasing and manufacturing.

Price the actual sheet and panel scope

The cost of a 2116 construction depends on the purchased material and how it is used. Ask for the exact grade, sheet format, ply count and quotation scope. Separate the prepreg allowance from core, foil and fabrication operations. If one proposal changes the number of plies, the purchased sheet area changes even when the finished board outline remains the same.

Budget outputs are planning scenarios. Check the included costs and rate assumptions; a confirmed quotation requires a review of your files and scope.

After changing inputs, update the result before using it. Where a download or copy action is available, review that brief and attach or paste it into your enquiry. Opening Contact does not transfer these inputs or send a request.

How to use and share tool results

The budget worksheet uses entered rates only. It rounds the planned production-panel count upward, multiplies the gross area per ply by the total ply count and then adds separately entered processing and setup allowances. The output is a subtotal for that documented scope. It does not quote a completed PCB or apply a generic price premium to 2116.

For a fair comparison, use the same ordered quantity and equivalent panel assumptions. Identify whether coupons and tooling margins are already included in the purchased area. Confirm minimum order quantities and packaging separately. A small lot may be dominated by setup or purchasing increments, so a lower nominal material rate can produce little change in the final offer.

Evidence to request before approving the build

The release package should identify the board revision, layer order, material schedule, finished dielectric requirements and any controlled impedance targets. Mark critical local areas on the artwork or drawing. Distinguish a preferred construction from a mandatory one, and identify who must approve an alternative.

Ask the fabricator to return a clear proposed stackup and exceptions list. Where dimensional or structural evidence is required, agree the measurement locations, representation and acceptance basis. A microsection at an unrelated location may not answer the question raised by a critical copper clearance. The evidence plan should follow the design risk rather than simply add a familiar test name.

2116 prepreg questions

Does 2116 always have 50% resin content?

No. Resin content belongs to the named product and construction option. Confirm the actual supplier row, revision and ordering designation. A familiar catalogue example should not become a universal purchasing rule.

Can copper coverage determine which prepreg to buy?

Coverage is one review input. Local copper distribution, opposite-face geometry, resin system, thickness target and the qualified process also matter. The worksheet calculates ideal recess volume and deliberately does not recommend a resin-content option.

Does a higher resin percentage guarantee better filling?

No guarantee follows from the percentage alone. Compare the complete material and its processing context, and ask for a fabrication review of the actual pattern. More resin is not a substitute for an appropriate construction and process.

Can I reuse a previous stackup after changing the copper artwork?

Review changes that affect local topography or electrical geometry. The same overall board size and layer count do not prove that the original construction assumptions remain valid. Identify the changed layers and preserve the response with the new revision.

Review your prepreg construction
