RF power converted to heat

Use explicit construction inputs. Results can be downloaded or opened as an email draft; the tool does not upload project information.

Worked planning example

Example: a matched path with 10 W input and 0.5 dB of entirely dissipative loss removes approximately 1.09 W from the transmitted signal. If the measured loss also includes reflection or radiation, treating all of it as board heat overestimates dissipation.

Use the result to inspect scale and sensitivity. Preserve the input units and assumptions in the downloaded brief, then use the actual finished geometry and appropriate solver or measurement method for release.

Find the loss mechanism before changing the substrate

Measured insertion loss can include dielectric attenuation, conductor loss, roughness, surface finish, radiation, mismatch and transitions. A low supplier Df reduces only one part of that problem. Begin by defining the measured path and reference planes. Compare line lengths and launches consistently so that a material experiment is not dominated by a different fixture or connector.

The dielectric-only model on this page assumes a constant loss tangent and an ideal microstrip geometry. It uses the chosen material Dk, height, synthesized width, frequency and length. It excludes copper and every discontinuity. Its output can help estimate one contribution or test sensitivity, but should never be labeled total board insertion loss.

Copper-related loss needs information beyond weight. Surface profile, treatment and finished conductor shape can matter. A smoother foil may help a high-frequency path, but the actual construction must still bond reliably and meet fabrication and assembly requirements. Specify the foil instead of using a broad low-loss adjective, and compare the complete material option under the same measurement conditions.

Use measurements to isolate causes where possible. A length-difference approach or other appropriate de-embedding strategy can help separate launch contributions, provided the structures and method support it. When a result disagrees with prediction, inspect the geometry and model assumptions before attributing all extra loss to the dielectric. A targeted correction is more valuable than changing several variables at once.

Use the original document for the right question

An electrical datasheet, fabrication guide and product safety information sheet have different purposes. The datasheet describes material properties and construction options. The fabrication guide helps a qualified shop plan processing. The safety information addresses handling and exposure. Keeping those roles distinct prevents a datasheet from being treated as a press recipe or a safety document from being mistaken for proof of circuit performance.

Use the original manufacturer link alongside the interpretation on this page. Record the document title, revision and the exact product designation used in the project. An archived file can be relevant to an old approved design, while a current revision may describe a changed test method or additional construction. Preserve that distinction when comparing data rather than silently replacing one number in a simulation.

Read tables horizontally and vertically. The column heading may define frequency and temperature; a footnote may restrict the stated value to one thickness or test setup. Superscript references are notes, not additional digits in the property. A typical Df measured at one frequency does not establish a complete frequency-dependent loss model. A process-Dk tolerance does not directly become a circuit impedance tolerance.

Translate the document into a short project-specific record: exact grade, chosen construction, model inputs, manufacturing requirements and open questions. Avoid copying all available properties into the drawing if they are not acceptance requirements. Conversely, do not omit the conditions that determine whether a critical value is applicable. The relevant manufacturing or material page linked here helps carry those decisions into the next step.

The useful result of reading a document is a better engineering decision. A download alone does not establish suitability, availability or manufacturing approval. If a legacy grade or suffix cannot be reconciled with the current supplier record, keep the numerical tool inputs blank and request confirmation. That preserves the uncertainty where it belongs instead of disguising it as an authoritative-looking calculation.

From a nominal line to a toleranced RF layout

Establish the local cross-section before choosing a trace width. Record the dielectric height, material model, copper thickness and reference-plane arrangement. A total board thickness is not a valid substitute for the distance to the reference plane unless the structure is truly a two-layer core with that definition. For stripline, check whether the trace is centered and whether the dielectric is homogeneous on both sides.

Use a preliminary calculation to estimate scale, then evaluate the actual construction in a suitable solver. The ideal line model provides a reproducible starting point, but it does not include solder mask, trapezoidal etch shape, conductor roughness, dispersion or a three-dimensional connector launch. A calculator output with many decimal places is still only as useful as the assumptions that generated it.

Translate manufacturing variation into circuit questions. A width tolerance, dielectric-height tolerance and Dk variation do not necessarily combine as a single worst-case impedance number for every circuit. Establish which variables can move together and which are independently controlled. For a filter, sensitivity of resonator length and coupling gap may be more useful than one line-impedance estimate. For an array, phase tracking across paths can matter more than a nominal delay value.

Keep a continuous and intentional return structure. Slots, voids, antipads and layer changes can alter the fields even when the trace width remains constant. Where a signal transitions to another layer, review the return connection and launch geometry. Where a metal enclosure or shield is close to the line, include it in the final electromagnetic model. The schematic net name does not describe those physical boundaries.

Release a drawing that links the electrical model to measurable construction. Identify critical dimensions, stackup revision, allowed substitutions and the test method. If a prototype leads to a geometry adjustment, record the reason and the revised model rather than allowing the change to remain an undocumented fabrication compensation. That record makes later procurement and repeat production substantially easier to compare.

Cost planning and a direct RFQ route

Choose the next experiment before committing the full build

For an engineering study, the useful cost question is often the cost of resolving uncertainty. A small representative coupon may answer a line-loss question, while a filter or antenna requires geometry that represents its actual fields. Define the experiment first, then price the necessary boards, fixtures and measurements. A cheap specimen that does not test the uncertain assumption can make the next revision more expensive.

Separate reusable work from recurring fabrication. A test fixture, de-embedding structure, stackup study or qualification report may be a one-time effort; material, processing and inspection can recur with each lot. State whether the quotation includes both. When comparing routes, preserve quantity, panel orientation, finish, measurement scope and the treatment of failed or spare specimens so the offers describe equivalent work.

Use the calculator as an input record for that discussion. Enter only allowances you actually have, and leave unknown costs open. A panel arrangement can illustrate why a small outline change affects material use, but it cannot determine availability, process yield or the cost of a new qualification. Send the construction and test question directly for an exact quote whenever those factors drive the decision.

Verify the construction that matters to the product

Make the model answerable by measurement

Start the validation plan with the quantity that matters to the circuit. It may be characteristic impedance, phase delay, total insertion loss, resonance, thermal resistance or dimensional movement. Define the operating condition and the measurement boundary. A result is useful when a second engineer can understand which part of the structure was measured and how the value relates to the design requirement.

Create a model-input record before fabricating the specimen. Include units, dielectric model, local reference-plane spacing, copper and the geometry that was actually solved. State the model omissions. The closed-form workbench on this page deliberately uses simplified assumptions so that its output can be checked. If the design violates those assumptions, use it only to understand scale and move the release dimensions into the appropriate electromagnetic or thermal model.

Then choose a specimen that can discriminate between likely causes of error. Two line lengths can help distinguish distributed loss from a fixed launch contribution. Different orientations may reveal a construction or measurement dependency. A thermal specimen must represent the interfaces and mounting conditions if those dominate the path. Avoid changing material, geometry and fixture simultaneously when the aim is to understand the effect of one of them.

Record the manufactured dimensions and test conditions with the result. Nominal artwork alone may not explain the measured circuit. A discrepancy can arise from etch shape, dielectric thickness, a launch or an environmental boundary rather than the parameter being investigated. Reconcile the model with the finished structure before adjusting a material value simply to make one curve fit.

Use the evidence to close a specific decision: release the geometry, request a tighter construction definition, revise the fixture, compare an alternate or repeat a focused test. Preserve the input and output files with the revision. That record makes the next build more predictable and gives the supplier a concrete question when a process or material change is proposed.

Questions before the next design or purchase decision

What should this page help me decide?

Estimate absorbed RF power and separate electromagnetic loss from temperature rise. Start with the named construction and the relevant engineering requirement. The photographs show physical circuit examples, while the original-source links and explicit model assumptions support the technical review.

Does the design tool approve this PCB for manufacture?

No. It calculates the stated preliminary model or organizes a construction brief. Finished copper, transitions, mixed dielectrics, assembly interfaces and process limits may require a more complete review. The downloaded result preserves assumptions so engineering can evaluate the same inputs.

Can I obtain a price without completing the tool?

Yes. Use the direct Contact or email route with your drawing, quantity and construction requirements. The optional budget uses your entered allowances and an explicit panel model; it is not a calibrated 勛圖tv tariff. Complex constructions need a file-based quotation.

What should I send with an enquiry?

Include the exact material designation, fabrication artwork, drill data, outline, proposed stackup, copper, finish and quantity. Add the relevant impedance, RF, thermal or mechanical acceptance requirements. If assembly is included, provide the BOM, placement data and test expectations.
