PCB via filling needs a material, a population and a final surface
PCB via filling places a specified material into a selected hole or cavity as part of a defined fabrication route. Resin fill, conductive paste fill and electroplated copper fill describe different constructions. A request becomes useful when it also names the hole population, layer span, fill stage, required surface condition and verification scope.
Filling alone does not mean the surface is metal capped, solderable or suitable for a component land. Nor does a mask membrane over an opening mean the cavity is filled. This page helps turn a functional requirement into a process brief and an optional budget discussion. For the broader board construction, continue to HDI PCB manufacturing.
Choose the process by the function of the via
For a plated through-hole requiring a stable filled surface, a resin-fill route may include filling, cure, planarization and separate metallization or capping operations. The exact sequence depends on the approved material and process. A copper-filled blind microvia instead relies on a prepared cavity and an electroplating system designed to build the intended deposit. Conductive paste introduces another material system whose cured properties must be reviewed independently.
| Functional requirement | Process question | Requirement still to specify |
|---|---|---|
| Solder land over a via | Which fill and metal-cap route is proposed? | Finished surface, sides, flatness and finish |
| Blind microvia connection | How are target preparation and copper fill controlled? | Complete chain and applicable evidence |
| Added axial heat path | Which material property improves the actual path? | Thermal model boundary and installed validation |
| Protective mask coverage only | Is tenting sufficient for this location? | Film process, accessible sides and testing |
| Selected holes only | How is the population identified? | Drawing map, exclusions and revision |
Do not select a process merely because its name sounds more conductive or more advanced. First state whether the design needs a solderable surface, mechanical support, electrical continuity, heat flow or a combination. The conductive versus non-conductive fill guide compares those property questions without treating a material label as an overall quality ranking.
Define the route and estimate the ideal cavity volume
This worksheet records the intended process route and calculates the geometric volume of a cylindrical or tapered cavity. Use dimensions at the stage being filled. If plating already occupies part of a drilled hole, the remaining cavity is smaller than the original drill diameter. A process drawing should make that distinction explicit.
Via-Fill Route and Cavity Volume
The illustrative cylindrical example uses a 0.20 mm open diameter, 1.60 mm depth and 1,000 selected holes. Its ideal volume is approximately 50.265 mm糧, or 0.050265 mL. That number describes empty geometry only. It does not include overfill, shrinkage, material left on tooling, process loss or a dispense strategy, and it must not be used as a purchase quantity.
For a tapered opening, the model uses the frustum expression shown below. Equal top and bottom diameters reduce it to the cylinder formula. A real laser profile can differ from an ideal frustum; process planning should use the appropriate measured or specified geometry. The tool deliberately separates this engineering calculation from the budget worksheet later on the page.
Write a note that leaves fewer interpretation gaps
A strong drawing note identifies the via family, layer span and hole population before describing the treatment. State which sides require a particular final condition. If some holes must remain open for probes, component leads or other functions, mark them as exclusions. Selective processing needs a reproducible data definition rather than an informal instruction to fill the small holes.
Keep fill material, metal cap and final surface finish separate in the note. The word conductive is insufficient because electrical resistivity and thermal conductivity are different properties. Likewise, copper filled should not be used as a loose synonym for resin filled and copper capped. Ask the manufacturer to restate the proposed finished structure when reviewing the drawing.
The IPC-4761 via-protection guide owns the classification discussion. Its linked distinguishes protection categories, but a public contents page does not supply every acceptance criterion. Use the licensed applicable document and project drawing for requirements, including agreed revisions and any approved exceptions.
Follow the selected route through its control points
For a resin route, the cavity condition, fill material handling and cure are connected decisions. The surface may then require planarization and a separate cap process. Each stage should preserve the intended geometry and adhesion. A drawing that specifies only the final appearance can leave unanswered how the internal cavity and surface interface will be evaluated.
For blind-microvia copper fill, hole formation, target preparation, metallization and plating need a coordinated process. MKS Atotech's illustrates this equipment-and-chemistry relationship. Its advertised dimensions or production results are vendor-specific information, not 勛圖tv manufacturing capabilities or promises for an unreviewed board.
For conductive paste, request the actual material and cured-state property data. Consider compatibility with later processing and any required cap or finish. A paste containing conductive particles is not automatically equivalent to solid plated copper, and its surface should not be assumed solderable without a defined route. The relevant question is whether the proposed completed construction satisfies the intended function and evidence requirements.

Review via-in-pad as an assembly interface
When the via is inside a component land, fabrication and assembly must agree on the surface the stencil and solder will encounter. A note that leaves an unexpected opening in the land can change paste behavior. A different cap or final finish can also change what the assembly process needs to review. Resolve these questions against the package and land-pattern requirements before pricing fabrication and assembly separately.
The BGA via-in-pad page addresses that package-specific handoff. For more general layer and surface definitions, use the HDI via-in-pad requirements guide. Neither page replaces the process definition here; the purpose of the links is to carry the chosen construction into the next engineering task.
Build a via-process allowance from documented inputs
An early budget can be useful when its scope is explicit. This worksheet estimates only the selected incremental via process using your panel allowance, one-time setup and lot inspection allowance. It does not provide live prices or assume that every resin, paste and copper-fill process has the same cost structure. Enter a current supplier or internal source before using the figures for a project.
Via-Fill Process Budget
In the illustrative scenario, 100 ordered boards, 12 panel positions and a 90% expected usable fraction require 10 whole process panels. At an example allowance of 30 per panel, plus 100 setup and 50 lot inspection, the total is 450 in the selected currency. These are arithmetic examples, not a 勛圖tv quote. The expected usable capacity is a planning quantity, not a guaranteed production yield.
Use a process-panel arrangement confirmed for the operation being budgeted. A finished-board assembly panel is not necessarily the same unit used during fabrication. Avoid double-counting planarization, capping or inspection if the panel allowance already includes them. Changing the process scope, currency or source clears the old allowances so that values from incompatible quotations are not accidentally combined.
Request records that explain the finished construction
Inspection planning should identify what is being assessed and at which stage. Surface condition, fill state, internal interfaces and electrical continuity are different questions. Define the relevant sample, method, criterion and revision rather than asking for an unspecified test report. Evidence should be traceable to the supplied construction and to any important processing differences from the qualification example.

For a reliability-sensitive chain, include the planned assembly and service thermal exposures in the review. A visually complete fill is not by itself proof of all interface behavior. The microvia evidence checklist helps organize construction identity and verification questions. If a quote excludes qualification work, retain that exclusion explicitly instead of assuming the lowest price includes every requested record.
Send a focused via-filling enquiry
Include the board revision, quantities, stackup, hole table and a clear selection map. State the reason for filling, the required sides and final surface, the proposed material or any permitted alternatives, and the evidence needed. If the fill route is still open, explain the functional requirement so engineering can compare sensible options.
Attach the complete fabrication files separately from the downloaded worksheets. The geometry worksheet and budget worksheet deliberately remain independent: cavity volume does not automatically determine process cost. You can go directly to Contact with the drawing and your questions. The tools do not upload files or submit a quotation request automatically.
Common via-filling decisions
Is via filling the same as tenting?
No. Tenting places a covering over an opening; filling addresses the cavity. The final surface and internal condition can be very different. Use the tented-via guide when the task is mask coverage rather than filling.
Does non-conductive resin stop the via conducting?
The plated copper barrel remains an electrical path in a properly specified plated-through structure. The filler is a separate material. Confirm the complete construction rather than assuming its electrical behavior from the fill name alone.
Can I use the volume result to buy resin?
No. It is an ideal geometric cavity volume. Dispensing, excess material, shrinkage, handling and process losses require a qualified manufacturing model. The result is useful for understanding dimensions and documenting the selected population.
What makes quotations difficult to compare?
Different selected populations, fill materials, cap requirements, panel bases and inspection scopes can describe different work. Compare the same finished structure and evidence requirements before interpreting a price difference as a saving.
