What an insulated metal substrate PCB actually specifies

An insulated metal substrate PCB places electrical circuitry over an insulating dielectric bonded to a metal base. In a common single-circuit-layer construction, the dielectric must support two different tasks: transfer heat toward the base and maintain the required electrical separation. A metal back is therefore only part of the design. The dielectric grade, finished thickness, copper pattern, mounting interface and operating conditions determine whether the proposed construction is useful for the product.

Use this page when preparing dielectric, isolation and heat-path requirements. The metal core PCB manufacturing page owns the wider commercial choice and quotation route. Here, the objective is a material request that a supplier can review without guessing what high thermal conductivity means. You can send the available files directly; the worksheets are optional ways to make unknowns and assumptions visible before the quotation discussion.

Do not specify the dielectric only by a conductivity number. Ask whether the number describes the dielectric itself, a laminate test structure or a system-level measurement. Test direction, specimen preparation, thickness and contact treatment can affect comparisons. Two attractive catalogue values are not necessarily interchangeable inputs to the same calculation. The illustrates why dielectric and product measurements must be read with their listed methods. Confirm the exact current grade document for procurement.

Start with a heat-flow area that you can defend

For a uniform slab, thermal resistance is thickness divided by conductivity and area: R = t/(k A). This simple relationship is useful because it exposes three assumptions that can otherwise disappear in a material comparison. Thickness describes the path length; conductivity describes the material under stated conditions; area describes the cross-section carrying the modeled heat. A board outline is not automatically the correct area underneath one small component.

Heat spreads laterally through copper and metal, so the effective area can change along the real path. A constant-area calculation does not reproduce that spreading. It also excludes the package, solder attachment, voids, base-to-sink contact and heat sink unless those are explicitly modeled elsewhere. The worksheet below intentionally reports the temperature difference across the dielectric slab, rather than an unsupported device-junction temperature. For a complete budget, continue to PCB thermal design.

Thickness, conductivity and area belong in the same calculation

Using this tool & sharing results

Use the stated units, input limits and model assumptions. Results support an engineering discussion; they do not approve a design, process or production order.

After changing inputs, update the result before using it. Where a download or copy action is available, review that brief and attach or paste it into your enquiry. Opening Contact does not transfer these inputs or send a request.

How to use and share tool results

Enter the through-plane conductivity from a relevant source and name the source, revision and conditions in the brief. Load illustrative example uses invented planning inputs, not a recommended laminate. The isolation fields record whether requirements have been defined; selecting Requirement recorded does not mean that the worksheet has checked the evidence. The downloadable result retains both the numerical assumptions and the unresolved controls for a useful engineering discussion.

Worked example: changing the dielectric before changing the metal

Consider a hypothetical dielectric 0.10 mm thick with conductivity 2 W/(m繚K), carrying heat uniformly over 100 mm簡. Its modeled resistance is 0.5 K/W. If 5 W flows through that slab, the calculated temperature difference is 2.5簞C. Halving the assumed area to 50 mm簡 doubles that contribution to 1 K/W. This sensitivity is often more informative than comparing two nominal conductivity values while leaving area undefined.

If another candidate has the same thickness and a justified conductivity of 4 W/(m繚K), the idealized dielectric contribution becomes 0.25 K/W. The calculation does not establish that the candidate has the required electrical strength, processing window, adhesion, aging performance or availability. It also does not establish a 50% improvement in the entire cooling system. If the other parts of the path contribute 3 K/W, only one relatively small term has changed.

Treat these values as a worksheet exercise. Keep the example separate from the released material specification and from measured prototype results. When requesting alternatives, ask the supplier to identify changes to thickness, material designation, construction, test evidence and price scope together. A substitution that improves one property can change processing, dimensional control or the required qualification work.

Electrical isolation needs its own requirements

A dielectric breakdown result is not a continuous working-voltage rating for an assembled product. Define operating voltage, waveform, transients, frequency, environment and the insulation function before agreeing a material. The product's applicable safety requirements and the controlled drawing determine the review. The website cannot infer these from board size or power alone, and the tool does not calculate an allowable voltage from a catalogue breakdown number.

Review copper-to-metal separation at edges, slots, mounting holes and machined features. A perfectly reasonable interior cross-section can still leave an unintended exposed-metal path at the outline. Define whether screw heads, washers, chassis parts or heat-sink surfaces can touch conductive features. Where the base has an intentional electrical connection, state its net and connection method; do not allow the fabricator to infer that all visible metal must be ground.

Do not convert breakdown voltage into operating approval
Requirements review, not a dielectric-strength or creepage calculator.

An electrical test request should identify the relevant conductors, reference metal, waveform, duration, limits, conditioning and required records. Agree whether a qualification test, production screen or both are needed. Passing one test condition does not establish every environmental or lifetime requirement. Similarly, optical inspection can reveal certain workmanship conditions but cannot independently demonstrate the complete insulation performance of a hidden bondline.

Layout and mounting decisions that change the result

Keep heat-generating parts close to the intended removal path, but coordinate electrical routing and assembly access. The source pad, copper spreading area and dielectric under it should be reviewed together. Avoid adding thermal copper that creates an electrical connection or clearance conflict. A thermal pad can be electrically active; its net is defined by the device documentation, not by the fact that it carries heat.

The metal base usually needs a controlled mechanical interface. Specify flatness or contact requirements where they matter, installation support, fastener pattern and an appropriate interface material. Excessive clamping can damage the assembly, while poor contact can leave a large resistance outside the board. Thermal expansion and repeated temperature changes can affect joints and interfaces even when the first powered test looks satisfactory. Record the operating cycle and constraints instead of treating a one-time temperature reading as lifetime evidence.

Double-sided routing, multilayer circuitry and holes crossing the metal introduce additional questions. Use the multilayer metal-core construction guide to specify which hole classes cross a metal section and how they remain isolated. Ordinary FR-4 thermal-via assumptions should not be copied into that construction. The metal is conductive, so a plated connection passing through it needs an explicit electrical and manufacturing design.

Using this tool & sharing results

Budget outputs are planning scenarios. Check the included costs and rate assumptions; a confirmed quotation requires a review of your files and scope.

After changing inputs, update the result before using it. Where a download or copy action is available, review that brief and attach or paste it into your enquiry. Opening Contact does not transfer these inputs or send a request.

How to use and share tool results

The budget worksheet uses your documented allowances only. Record the dielectric grade, thickness, circuit layers, base material, copper, finish, outline, quantity and inspection scope behind the numbers. The separate process allowance is for work that is not already included in the base allowance. If the quotation includes testing or tooling in the board price, do not add the same operation again. Zero means deliberately excluded or included elsewhere; it is not evidence that the operation is free.

Cost changes can come from material availability, usable panel layout, profiling, hole treatment, inspection evidence and the number of release or setup operations. These are project-specific drivers, not universal percentage premiums. A thin high-performance dielectric with a tightly controlled interface can be more useful than a thicker expensive metal base, but that decision needs the complete technical and commercial comparison. Use the aluminum versus copper comparison when the principal alternative is the base metal.

What to include for a focused engineering review

Send the fabrication data and a readable section drawing, together with the metal's electrical role. Identify the component heat sources, operating loss estimate and cooling interface, distinguishing known measurements from assumptions. List the selected dielectric or the properties that remain open, and attach the source documents used for important numerical inputs. Include prototype and repeat-order quantities separately because the setup allocation may change.

For manufacturing planning, connect the material decision to the metal-core fabrication process. The engineering review should establish a feasible sequence, acceptance criteria and outstanding validation before production release. Where your requirement is outside a familiar single-layer IMS structure, the next step is a construction discussion rather than an automatically generated price. A complete enquiry can still be useful when the final laminate choice has not been made.

Questions about insulated metal substrate PCB

Is every aluminum PCB an insulated metal substrate?

Many aluminum-backed circuit boards use an insulating dielectric between circuit copper and the metal. Specify the actual section rather than relying on a category name. The insulation, metal connections and local exceptions must be visible in the drawing.

Does a thinner dielectric always improve the design?

It reduces the idealized through-thickness thermal contribution when conductivity and area stay constant. Electrical, dimensional, manufacturing and reliability requirements can still prevent that change. Compare the complete construction and its evidence.

Can this calculator approve isolation or predict junction temperature?

No. It calculates one dielectric-slab contribution and records review requirements. Device temperature and electrical acceptance require the actual construction, applicable requirements, valid system boundaries and appropriate verification.

Can I request a quote without completing the tools?

Yes. Use the direct project-review link and send the available files, quantities and unresolved questions. The worksheet is a preparation aid; it is not a prerequisite for a manufacturing enquiry.

Bring the requirement and the drawing together

Send the board revision, construction, quantity and the standard or engineering question you need reviewed. Identify unresolved requirements so the response can address them.
