Define the metal position before saying multilayer
A multilayer metal core PCB combines multiple electrical circuit layers with a specified metal base, central metal section or related thermal construction. Layer count alone does not describe it. Two electrical layers above a metal back differ from circuitry on opposite faces of a central metal plate. Those choices change the interconnection route, cooling surface, assembly access and insulation required around holes. Begin with a section drawing that names every conductive layer and every intended connection to the metal.
This page supports construction and fabrication review. The metal core PCB service page remains the commercial overview, while the IMS dielectric guide addresses dielectric material and heat-flow specifications. A multi-layer proposal is not approved because its drawing resembles an example. The actual materials, sequence, dimensions, electrical requirements and verification scope need agreement for the project.
Three architectures that require different questions
| Architecture | Electrical arrangement | Main engineering question |
|---|---|---|
| Routing layers above metal back | Multiple circuit layers are above a lower metal base | Which thermal and dielectric layers separate the heat source from the base? |
| Circuitry around central metal | Electrical layers lie on both sides of a metal section | Which holes cross the metal and how are their walls isolated? |
| Local metal insert or coin | A defined metal feature occupies part of a larger board | Where is the feature bonded, insulated or intentionally contacted? |
Do not count a thick metal base as a routing layer unless it actually has a defined electrical function in the construction. Conversely, a copper circuit plane is not automatically the same thing as a structural metal core. Naming the layers L1, L2 and so forth, and naming the metal section separately, removes ambiguity in fabrication conversations. Identify any intentional chassis or ground bond on the net definition and drawing.

The external surfaces matter too. A metal-backed board may dedicate its back to a heat-sink interface, leaving component assembly on the circuit side. A central-metal design may have circuitry on both faces, but the availability of usable assembly space depends on the complete section and hardware. Avoid universal rules such as all multilayer metal boards permit only one assembly side or all holes can use normal FR-4 plating. The structure determines the route.
The extra layers change the thermal and electrical paths
Additional circuitry can improve routing freedom but introduce dielectric and interface contributions between a device and the metal. A heat source on the upper layer may not have a direct path through every lower conductor. Copper coverage, local geometry and the selected interlayer materials matter. Keep electrical stackup requirements, including any controlled impedance, distinct from the thermal model rather than assuming the metal core solves both automatically.
The is useful for understanding the range of dielectric requirements and material-selection factors. It does not establish 勛圖tv's stock, a finished stackup or the acceptance of a proposed multilayer sequence. Quote the exact grade and relevant document revision, then ask the fabricator to review its use in your construction and processing sequence.
Review a hole passing through an insulated metal clearance
Metal-Core Hole Isolation
The worksheet describes a circular clearance region in the metal, an insulating fill or region, and a smaller prepared hole through it. It calculates a conservative geometric wall using dimensional limits and total radial eccentricity. Use the drill envelope before plating for this comparison. The finished bore is smaller because plated copper occupies part of the prepared hole; substituting finished diameter can overstate the remaining insulation.
The minimum-wall requirement must come from the project and agreed process. The tool does not derive it from working voltage, IPC class or a universal online design rule. Non-circular features, slotted holes, several independently located features or complex registration chains need a proper drawing and tolerance review. The structure selector provides an explanatory section, not a production-ready stackup file.
Worked example: why nominal clearance is insufficient
Suppose a nominal metal clearance is 1.20 mm with a minus allowance of 0.05 mm. The prepared drill is 0.50 mm with a plus allowance of 0.03 mm, and the total radial eccentricity allowance is 0.10 mm. The modeled minimum wall is (1.15 0.53)/2 0.10 = 0.21 mm. If the entered project requirement is 0.20 mm, the arithmetic margin is only 0.01 mm.
That result is a dimensional comparison, not insulation approval. The tolerance inputs need to represent the actual datum and manufacturing chain without omitting a contributor or charging the same contributor twice. Material voids, adhesion, exposed edges, electrical stress and environmental conditioning are separate. If the computed wall is negative, the envelopes overlap; a favorable average registration does not repair that worst-case conflict.
A useful next step is to mark the hole class on the drawing and ask which dimensions are controlled at each operation. Establish how the fabricator will verify the clearance region, prepared drill location and plated interconnection. Request evidence appropriate to the risk, rather than requiring a generic section photograph that does not represent the critical feature or the actual lot.
A review sequence from drawing to inspected board
Start by identifying the architecture, then prepare the metal and insulating regions as required by the selected route. Circuit imaging, etching, lamination, drilling, plating and profiling must be sequenced around that structure. The sequence is not identical for every metal-backed laminate or embedded metal design. A discussion of the metal-core PCB manufacturing process provides the wider context; this page concentrates on where multilayer construction changes the questions.
During release review, identify which features are plated, non-plated, blind, buried or intentionally connected to the metal. Specify relevant metal clearances, insulating regions and edge conditions. Separate circuit-to-circuit continuity from circuit-to-metal isolation. A conventional netlist may not fully explain the role of a floating metal base, so provide a readable electrical and mechanical note rather than relying on file names alone.
The heat-sink interface should be defined before final profiling and mounting decisions. A flatness problem, burr or poorly controlled contact area can dominate thermal performance outside the laminate. Assembly fixtures may need to support the additional mass and control movement during heating. Discuss soldering and inspection access at the same time as board construction, especially where local inserts, heavy copper or components on both sides alter heat distribution.
Inspection questions that match the hidden structure
| Review object | Useful evidence to agree | What a surface photograph cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| Dielectric interfaces | Grade records, section condition and relevant acceptance criteria | Continuous bond quality throughout the board |
| Isolated through connection | Controlled hole class, representative section and electrical test | Minimum remaining wall under all tolerances |
| Intended metal bond | Net definition and a specified connection check | Whether every metal contact is intentional |
| Thermal interface | Mechanical dimensions and assembled boundary verification | Contact pressure, interface resistance or operating temperature |
| Product reliability | Representative environmental and cycling plan | Lifetime from one room-temperature inspection |
Avoid requesting IPC certified as a substitute for a meaningful specification. Identify the applicable design, fabrication and acceptance documents and the contractually agreed edition and class where relevant. Specialized constructions may require additional agreed criteria. A public process description does not demonstrate qualification of every material combination or every application, and an online tool cannot sign the release on behalf of the responsible engineer.

Separate construction cost from unsupported price multipliers
Multilayer Metal-Core Documented Budget
Enter a documented base recurring allowance and a separate allowance for operations not already included, such as the agreed hole-isolation or additional lamination scope. Identify the exact quote or internal basis and its date. The calculation allocates a one-time setup allowance across the order; it does not invent current material prices or scale a standard FR-4 board by a universal multiplier. Treat sample inputs as arithmetic examples only.
A quotation comparison should hold constant electrical layers, metal position, material grades, copper requirements, holes, outline, finish, acceptance evidence and order quantity. Construction changes can affect panel use and the number of process or inspection steps. Ask which features drive the difference and whether a simpler architecture could serve the product. More layers or a copper base may increase complexity without improving the dominant thermal bottleneck.
For an aluminum-versus-copper decision, use the base-metal comparison before assuming the most conductive metal is the best commercial choice. For a hot organic-laminate design, thermal vias may be part of a different construction route. Their ordinary plated-barrel model should not be applied unchanged to an insulated hole passing through a central metal core.
Files that make the next review productive
Provide fabrication data, stackup, section views, drill table, metal clearance definitions and the electrical role of the base. Identify critical dimensions and their datums. Include assembly constraints, heat sources, available cooling surfaces, mounting hardware and the intended environment. If the material or isolation requirement is unresolved, state the requirement and the evidence you need rather than selecting a grade merely to complete a form.
Request a review of the proposed sequence and critical features before freezing the design. Agree how questions, substitutions and approved drawing changes will be recorded. The result should be a reproducible construction with defined acceptance, not a collection of attractive catalogue claims. You can send the files directly through Contact; the optional brief helps communicate the current proposal and does not automatically upload or transfer project data.
Multilayer metal-core construction questions
Is two-layer metal-backed PCB the same as double-sided metal-core PCB?
Not necessarily. Two electrical layers can both lie above a metal back, while a double-sided construction may place circuits on opposite faces of central metal. Use a section drawing to define the intended arrangement.
Can plated holes cross the metal without shorting to it?
An appropriate insulated construction can separate selected interconnections from the metal. The required clearance, fill, drilling, plating and verification must be agreed. A normal through-hole callout alone does not explain that structure.
Does meeting the wall calculation establish electrical safety?
No. It only compares entered geometric limits. Electrical requirements, material evidence, process quality, edges and the agreed test conditions remain separate parts of the review.
Can the board be quoted before every thermal detail is final?
Yes, with the assumptions and unresolved requirements clearly identified. A preliminary construction discussion can help close those decisions; the resulting estimate is not a released manufacturing specification.
