Reflow Thermocouple Placement: Find Hot, Cold and Sensitive Locations

Reflow thermocouple placement determines whether a measured profile represents the connections and components that matter. A sensor on a convenient empty corner can miss a thermally heavy joint or a sensitive package. The placement plan should follow the product's thermal questions and document exactly what each channel measures.

This page helps select locations, preserve attachment evidence and compare measured peaks. The worksheet summarizes entered channel peaks and their spread. It does not infer unmeasured board locations or convert a peak spread into an instantaneous temperature-gradient measurement.

Begin with the assembly and its heat paths

Review board size, copper distribution, large packages, connectors, shields, heat-sensitive parts and the intended carrier. Identify locations likely to heat slowly and locations likely to heat quickly. Include component restrictions that may apply to a body temperature rather than a solder joint.

These are candidates, not guaranteed extremes. Measurements may show that a seemingly small connection is slow because it connects to a large copper plane. Retain the reasoning for each sensor so a future revision can be assessed without starting the placement plan from scratch.

Assign a clear purpose to every channel

For each channel, record reference designator, board side, physical location, intended measurement and relevant requirement. A joint-temperature channel and a package-body channel answer different questions. Label them in the raw data and in a photograph or drawing of the sensor map.

Avoid names such as TC1 hot without stating where the sensor is. That label can become misleading after a design or fixture change. When a measurement under a package is necessary, use an appropriate preparation method and record how the preparation may influence the result.

Using this tool & sharing results

Use the stated units, input limits and model assumptions. Results support an engineering discussion; they do not approve a design, process or production order.

After changing inputs, update the result before using it. Where a download or copy action is available, review that brief and attach or paste it into your enquiry. Opening Contact does not transfer these inputs or send a request.

How to use and share tool results

Use the current inputs and keep the assumptions

Choose the question you need to answer before entering numbers. Fields begin blank. Select Load example only to explore the model; example inputs are teaching values, not process recommendations or market prices. The example label remains visible after editing. Reset before preparing a record based entirely on your own data.

Use the displayed units and record the source of every input. Dimensions must share a reference and revision; temperature measurements must identify the location and method. An entered threshold or interval is your supplied review condition, not an IPC limit provided by this website. If a value is unknown, keep it open and obtain evidence rather than filling the space with a familiar number.

Read the assumptions alongside the result. A positive geometric margin answers only the stated calculation. It does not establish wetting, joint strength, production capability or compliance. A negative result remains visible so an incompatible assumption is not hidden. Checklist entries are self-reported and do not prove that the supporting documents were inspected.

Changing an input invalidates the displayed result and disables the download until the calculation is repeated. The text record includes inputs, results and limitations. Processing stays in this browser: no CAD data is read, no measurement system is connected and no information is automatically sent to Contact. Download and attach the record manually if it helps your enquiry. You can contact 勛圖tv directly without using a tool.

Treat attachment as part of the measurement system

Sensor contact, thermal mass, wire routing and attachment material can influence the reported curve. Follow the profiler and process guidance for the intended measurement. Provide strain relief so the junction does not move during handling or transport through the oven.

KIC's profiling documentation emphasizes thermocouple attachment and representative product locations. It is equipment guidance with its own context, not permission to assume every attachment method gives identical results. Verify that the sensor remains in the intended position and investigate abnormal curves rather than deleting them as inconvenient data.

Use a representative product and loading condition

The instrumented assembly should represent the construction, population and support that the production process will see. A bare board does not automatically reproduce the thermal response of a densely populated assembly. A heavily modified sample can also differ from the product it is intended to represent.

Record machine loading and carrier configuration. If a profile is approved under one condition and the line later changes substantially, determine whether that approval still applies. The profile analyzer is useful only after the measurement context is credible.

Compare peaks without confusing time relationships

Suppose three channels reach individual peaks of 238, 244 and 246 C. Their peak spread is 8 C. The hottest and coldest individual peaks may occur at different times, so 8 C is not necessarily the greatest simultaneous difference between those locations during the process.

The worksheet reports the entered peak values, minimum, maximum and spread. To evaluate an instantaneous spread, aligned full curves are required. To evaluate a spatial gradient, distances and a defined temperature field are needed. Do not rename a simple peak comparison as either measurement.

Review every channel against its own applicable limit

A package-body maximum and a solder-joint formation requirement cannot be applied indiscriminately to every sensor. Establish which limits apply, then review peak, time and relevant rate for each location. A satisfactory average across channels cannot compensate for one critical location outside its permitted window.

If one curve differs sharply from repeated measurements, investigate attachment and setup as well as the process. A useful repeatability check can prevent a loose junction from driving a damaging recipe change. Preserve both the original and corrected measurement records with the explanation.

Maintain the sensor map through changes

Define triggers for review: board revision, copper or component change, carrier modification, material system, maintenance or loading changes. Not every change demands a completely new profiling exercise, but the decision should have a reason and an owner.

Send 勛圖tv the sensor map, attachment photographs, raw curves, applicable limits and product identity when a thermal question needs review. For a BGA open, combine this information with the warpage and joint-formation investigation. Temperature evidence is valuable, but it should not be presented as a direct measurement of package movement or proof of hidden-joint bonding.

How should a new measurement location be documented?

Use a marked assembly view and a stable sensor identifier. State whether the sensor represents a joint, package surface, board region or another location, and record how it is attached. Keep the identifier consistent in the trace file and the profile summary. If an attachment comes loose or noticeably changes the local geometry, record the issue rather than quietly treating the trace as equivalent to the others. This information makes a later hot/cold comparison reproducible.

Make the measurement chain part of the engineering record

Identify the assembly, revision, loading condition, support and measurement locations before comparing temperature traces. The same oven settings can produce different responses on different products. A trace without its location and attachment method is difficult to interpret when the problem concerns a particular joint or temperature-sensitive component.

Choose locations to test the engineering concern. Large thermal masses, shielded regions, small sensitive parts and package interfaces can respond differently. There is no universal number or placement pattern that makes every profile representative. Keep the sensor and attachment effects in mind when deciding what the measurement actually represents.

Retain the sampled data, time basis and any processing applied. Peak, time above a threshold and segment rates answer different questions. Individual sensor peaks may occur at different times, so their spread is not automatically the maximum simultaneous temperature difference across the board.

When a worksheet interpolates between points, its result depends on the sampling interval. It cannot recover an unmeasured transient or correct an attachment error. Use the summary to organize the record and identify a concern, then evaluate it against the actual material guidance and agreed process criteria.

Track previous exposures of the profiling or rework sample. A repeatedly heated assembly can become less representative through material changes or damage. Summing times across separate events is useful bookkeeping, but it is not a fatigue or remaining-life model and does not authorize another operation.

For supplier discussion, provide the raw trace where available, sensor map, relevant material restrictions, known exposure history and the question to resolve. Distinguish an equipment recipe from a measured product profile. A clear measurement record allows the next review to focus on the thermal constraint rather than reconstructing what a screenshot of the oven display might mean.

Standards, source context and limits

Use the references for their stated purpose. A material-vendor application note supports its specified material and conditions; a research paper reports the study it describes. Neither should be converted into a universal setting or a guarantee for a different assembly. Public standard summaries and contents are not complete normative requirements.

Agree the applicable controlled documents, revisions, acceptance basis and exceptions before production. IPC J-STD-001 concerns requirements for soldered assemblies, IPC-A-610 addresses assembly acceptability, and IPC-7711/7721 addresses rework, modification and repair procedures within its scope. Applicability must be established for the contract and task; this page does not certify compliance or reproduce paid acceptance tables.
